Summary of the Position: The Montgomery Academy is seeking a teacher to focus primarily on Middle School Art. Our art class serves students in Grades 5 - 8 and lays the foundation for the work that students will do in the Upper School visual arts program. This individual should encourage a sense of art appreciation in students, design developmentally appropriate art lessons using a variety of mediums, and expand our students' understanding of renowned artists. An ideal candidate will work to create a classroom environment that challenges and supports each student in his or her pursuit of excellence. A full teaching load is five sections per semester and a semester study hall. Classes could include a section in the Upper School visual arts as well.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and teach developmentally appropriate art classes that reflect current best practices
  • Provide students with specific, actionable feedback and grades
  • Communicate with parents proactively, positively, and professionally to support the academic, social-emotional, and physical needs of students
  • Collaborate with the Middle School teachers, the MA Art Department (K-12), and the MA Director of the Arts
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools
  • Plan art displays and participate in exhibitions of students' work for the school and the community, i.e., Alabama National Fair Art Show, Alabama Independent School Association Art Show, and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts student exhibits.
  • Integrate the language of leadership and character development into the classroom
  • Actively engage in the school's process of process growth and development
  • Serve as a Middle School advisor
  • Perform other duties to support the division and/or school as a whole Qualifications
    • A bachelor's degree in Art, Art Education (advanced degree preferred)
    • Experience in teaching art (Middle / Upper level preferred)
