We invite qualified candidates to apply for our Plant Mechanic III position. Well-qualified mechanics must have master level and team lead work in highly mechanical jobs in the maintenance and repair of specialized machinery in an advanced wastewater treatment plant located at Noman M. Cole Jr., Pollution Control Plant.

Responsibilities as a Lead Mechanic include:Directs one or more plant mechanics and helpers during the execution of special projects and during large, complex repair or overhaul work.Performs/inspects major highly skilled complex industrial mechanical corrective and preventive maintenance and special in-house projects on specialized wastewater plant process equipment and executes all major critical mechanical repairs and overhauls.Assists in the analysis and determination of equipment failures and takes immediate and independent repair/corrective action. Sets up and aligns all types of process equipment.Rebuilds plant machinery and equipment such as heavy-duty pumps, compressors, vacuum pumps, electrostatic air filters, chlorinators, evaporators, incinerators, and other process equipment. Performs minor electrical repair and plumbing work as necessary.Maintains records of work required, work performed, and time and materials required.Assists in creating and maintaining a computerized preventive maintenance and equipment database.Engages in safe working practices and complies with regulatory requirements and safety requirements.Utilizes county computers for training, on-line time, attendance and ordering of parts and materials.In the absence of the supervisor, assigns and oversees the work of the maintenance crews.
The ideal candidate must have:Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to lead plant mechanics, welders and maintenance crews. You'll need to be able to translate your technical knowledge into everyday language, explain any changes that come up, and lead by example.Able to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment; and able to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure and guide/delegate in meeting deadlines.Promotes communication, teamwork, and collaboration within the team.Detailed oriented with strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

NOTE: Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: Graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education, or completion of a registered apprenticeship program plus five years of experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps, motors and other wastewater equipment.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: A valid driver's license.Backflow prevention license within 12 months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Subject to 24 hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste or environments generating methane gas.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:At least four years of experience in the following:Performing master-level preventive and corrective maintenance work on water or wastewater pumping equipment which may include: Pumps of various design up to 600hp, small electric motors, standby generators, blowers, gasoline and diesel engines, air compressors, comminutors, and/or screening equipment.Troubleshooting faulty equipment and determining the proper procedure to repair, replace, or otherwise rehabilitate, rebuild or fabricate parts for that equipment.Reading and interpreting equipment diagrams, process flow diagrams, and/or blueprints, and accurately identifying equipment and/or components needed to complete repairs.Performing work using precision measurement tools such a micrometer, dial indicator, feeler gauge, and torque wrench.Experience utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track upcoming, in progress, and completed work as well as tracking time and materials.Performing routine inspections of industrial plant and equipment.Performing required emergency repairs on production equipment necessary to address plant breakdowns.OSHA certified.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to distinguish colors of electrical conductors. Ability to drive in inclement weather and ability to work in extreme temperatures and confined spaces with raw sewage. Ability to lift 50 lbs., drive 1/2, 3/4-, and 1-ton utility truck and operate hoisting equipment. Ability to routinely climb ladders and stairs, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend or twist their body to perform troubleshooting of industrial equipment. Ability to use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects and to move two or more limbs together while remaining in place. Ability to wear all personal protective equipment necessary to mitigate exposure to hazards which may include raw wastewater, wastewater treatment related chemicals, loud noise, slippery conditions, and potential exposure to airborne substances or pathogens. Frequent exposure to loud noises and rare exposure to airborne substances and routine climbing. Must be capable of pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and climbing to enter permitted confined spaces such as in and out of catch basins and manholes. Per safety requirements, confined spaces may not be entered by persons who weigh 310lbs. or more. Requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, walk, climb, sit, kneel, reach, crawl, lift and manipulate materials with manual dexterity, and work in strenuous and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
