The Rapid Prototyping Group partners with mission areas across the Laboratory to develop and field new technology and hardware demonstrations.

The group's portfolio of programs is diverse with execution timelines typically under a year.

One-third of the group's portfolio pertains to projects involving systems developed for installation on aircraft, installation of equipment on aircraft, configuration management of experimental aircraft, and flight test support.

Position Description

The group is seeking Assistant Staff candidates to support the aircraft integration portfolio.

Tasking may include any of the following:

  • Defining design requirements for equipment to be installed on and aircraft
  • Specifying analysis and/or documentation required to demonstrate airworthiness
  • Using Solidworks to generate and/or review designs for fabrication
  • Overseeing integration of equipment onto aircraft, to include resolution of issues identified during integration
  • Participation in flight test of installed equipment
Aircraft integration work depends on teamwork.

The ideal candidate will be a strong team member with excellent written and verbal communication skills and possess a creative problem-solving mindset.

As a strong team member, such a candidate will be both a good listener and willing to speak up when required.

Requirements

  • BS in Engineering (mechanical, aerospace, or similar) with 1 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to maintain FAA Third Class Medical Certificate (preference given to those who already hold such certification)
  • Willingness to fly on experimental aircraft in support of flight test ( 100hrs/year)
  • SolidWorks proficiency
  • Willingness to be onsite at least 80% time
  • Familiarity with airworthiness standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communications
  • Ability to articulate requirements or needs as a prototype design evolves.
Requirements may cover physical designs, documentation, analysis, aircraft operations and/or software

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Active SECRET clearance desired
  • ARAS Innovator experience
  • High Altitude Chamber certification
  • Familiarity with 14 CFR Part 25 Airworthiness Standards
