Ithaca, New York, United States Cornell University Full time

Temporary Technician (39 hours/week)

The New York State Hemlock Initiative (NYSHI) integrates research, management, and outreach to conserve New York State's hemlock resources in the face of multiple threats, particularly the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive insect that is widespread throughout eastern North America and the upper Midwest. A focus of the initiative is research on biological control of HWA using predatory insects (small beetles and flies). We collect and release these insects according to regulations set by the USDA-APHIS.

The temporary technician will work at a quarantine facility near campus and on the main campus. Weekend work will be required with time released during the week. The temporary technician will work closely with one other staff member and adhere to all safety protocols.

Start date: February 26, 2024

End date: June 28, 2024

Duties

The shared duties include setup and daily maintenance of cages containing hemlock foliage, use of pruning shears to cut up tree branches and arrange them in bins, watering the hemlock foliage, daily collection of insects from the cages using an aspirator, sorting and caring for insects, cleaning and repairing cages, identification and sexing of insects, dissecting foliage under the microscope, general lab organization and cleanliness, assisting with experimental data collection, and complete and accurate record keeping and data entry.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma and interest in a science field.

Precise manual dexterity to transfer small, delicate insects without harming them.

Attention to detail and ability to follow protocols and rules exactly.

Physical ability to work in a greenhouse environment wearing Tyvek suit and PPE, moving and working in various positions such as crouched, standing, and on a stepladder, and lifting up to 40 pounds.

Able to work weekends with two days off during the week.

Driver's license and own vehicle; the quarantine facility is not directly on a bus line and buses do not run as much on weekends.

Preferred Qualifications
