Summary

**This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be April 16th, 2024, with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled.**



Duties

The Dental Hygienist provides direct patient care under the general supervision of the dentist within the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS). CAVHCS is a consolidated health care system that includes VA Medical Centers in Montgomery and Tuskegee Alabama as well as Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Dothan, Ft. Rucker, and Monroeville, Alabama, Fort Benning and Columbus, Georgia and the Montgomery VA Clinic.

Major duties, include but are not limited to:

  • Setting up operatory area for planned dental procedures and cleans dental unit for timely turnover.
  • Handling instruments safely, accurately, and efficiently.
  • Providing routine oral prophylactic care to include applicant of fluoride solutions.
  • Provides gross debridement, deep scaling, and curettage and root planning procedures.
  • cleans dental prostheses, fixed and removable.
  • Manages dental recall system, referring patients to the doctor for additional care when needed.
  • Applies desensitizing and sealant materials.
  • Makes impressions for fluoride carrier trays.
  • Provides patient education appropriate to veterans' needs and oral conditions.
  • Dental imaging safety techniques are utilized, and retakes are minimized.
  • Demonstrates proper infection control procedures in setting up and cleaning up operatory area.
  • Charts findings, treatment plans, and treatment provided in patient records.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA with written and verbal information.
  • Maintains advanced knowledge of oral and dental anatomy including, root anatomy, common pathologies and anomalies, and indications.
  • Maintains advanced knowledge of medical assessment techniques including interviewing and evaluating clinical findings such as: normal and critical lab values to adapt treatment based on medical and psychological issues.
  • Modifies care as appropriate for patient's age and abilities (patient transfer and position).
  • Completes mandatory annual safety training sessions.
Work Schedule: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday
