Manager, Otolaryngology Laboratory

Essential functions (job duties):

Job Purpose

Oversee daily operations and management of staff within the research laboratory. Manage the laboratory so that research faculty can develop preventative and intervention strategies. Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) with grant application, renewal, and administration. Participate in stem cell based inner ear regeneration using biochemical, molecular, cellular, and in vivo approaches.

Essential Functions

Assists the Principal Investigator's (PI) in laboratory administration for three federal funded research projects. Ensure grants funds have been effectively and efficiently utilized and remain within budget. Take corrective actions if necessary. Prepare reports of statistical and administrative reports and analysis summaries regarding grant activities. Serve as the primary liaison between the PI, School of Medicine's (SOM) research department and Sponsored Program Administration (SPA) to identify and resolve problems, answer inquiries regarding university or funding agency guidelines, policies, and procedures. Coordinate and monitor laboratory safety compliance. Optimize types and availability of supplies including managing cost, contracts, and maintenance. Maintain relationships with vendors to ensure appropriate resources are available for research projects.

Provide overall leadership and direction to laboratory staff. Set expectations, assign duties, delegate responsibilities, evaluate activities, prepare performance appraisals and professional development plans. Provide coaching and mentoring. Manage the administrative process for assigned staff including hiring, terminations, disciplinary procedures, and salary adjustments with the assistance of the PI. Provide ongoing performance feedback, goal setting and development plans for staff. Plan for future staffing needs. Provide training and direction on methods and procedures. Organize and manage laboratory schedules to ensure staffing levels are established for a successful unit.

Participate in the research of transgenic mouse model, animal behavioral study, stem cell biology, hair cell regeneration, neural regeneration, and synapse formation.

Coordinate Wayne State (WSU) the administration work for the PI's Veterans Affairs (VA) grants between WSU and the local Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Grant application and renewal.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Unique duties:

Successful candidates will assist the PI for the lab administration and research for the 3 federal funded research. The lab manager will participate in the research of transgenic mouse model, animal behavioral study, stem cell biology, hair cell regeneration, neural regeneration, and synapse formation. In the lab administration, the lab manager will organize the lab, recruit new team member, monitor the employment renewal, and coordinate the administration work for the PI's VA grants between Wayne State University and the local VAMC.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in biology, chemistry engineering or related field.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Experience: Intermediate (3 to 4 years job-related experience)

  • Previous experience in laboratory management (at least 1 year experience).
  • Familiar with inner ear dissection and molecular biology (subcloning), grant application, institutional protocol preparation and renewal (3-4 years' experience).
  • Knowledge of administration process between WSU and the local Veterans Affairs Medical Clinic (VAMC).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Inner Ear Biology and Chemistry Engineering Skill: inner ear dissection, auditory synapse study using biochemical engineering, and hearing test skills.
  • Animal Behavioral Study Skills: Y-maze, open field, rotarod, novel object recognition, startle response, and related software analysis.
  • Project Management: Ability to independently manage a variety of projects while ensuring appropriate tracking, quality control, follow-up and multiple deadlines are met. Strong time management.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally, both orally and in writing. Strong presentation and training skills.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office tools including Teams, Planner, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerBI and PowerPoint. Extensive knowledge of Cayuse, Banner FMS, COGNOS, InfoReady, WSU Researcher Dashboard.
  • Planning and Organizational Skills: Demonstrated capacity for multi-tasking, flexibility in face of changing priorities, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Prioritize and plan work activities; adapt to changing conditions and develop strategies to achieve organizational goals.
  • Supervisory Skills: Ability to delegate work, set clear direction and manage workflow. Strong mentoring and coaching skills. Demonstrated success in training and developing staff in methods and procedures. Ability to foster teamwork and collaboration among staff members.
  • Leadership Skills: Ability to lead and influence subordinates and peers, make difficult decisions, function with integrity, and demonstrate sound judgement. Outstanding strategic thinking skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret and analyze, compile data, in clear and concise format for management reports and decision making.

Preferred qualifications:

The applicants must at least have a bachelor, Master, or equivalent degree. The candidate should have previous experience in the lab manager position, be familiar with the inner ear dissection and molecular biology (subcloning), grant application, institutional protocol preparation and renewal, and the coordination of administration work between the university and the local VAMC.
