Job Overview: Telus Health is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Actuary specializing in Pensions to join our dynamic team. The Principal Actuary will play a pivotal role in providing actuarial leadership and expertise in the design, valuation, and management of pension plans. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of innovative pension solutions that meet the evolving needs of our clients and drive positive outcomes for pension plan members.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Actuarial Valuation and Analysis:
    • Conduct actuarial valuations of pension plans to assess funding requirements, liabilities, and financial health.
    • Analyze demographic and financial data to forecast future pension obligations and funding requirements.
    • Perform sensitivity analysis and scenario testing to evaluate the impact of economic and demographic changes on pension plan sustainability.
  2. Pension Plan Design and Strategy:
    • Collaborate with clients and internal stakeholders to design and implement pension plans that align with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
    • Develop innovative pension plan designs and funding strategies to optimize financial sustainability and mitigate risks.
    • Provide expert guidance on pension plan governance, investment policies, and risk management practices.
  3. Regulatory Compliance and Reporting:
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and standards governing pension plans, including accounting standards (e.g., IFRS, GAAP) and pension legislation.
    • Prepare actuarial reports, financial statements, and disclosures for regulatory filings and financial audits.
    • Stay abreast of legislative and regulatory changes impacting pension plans and advise on necessary adjustments.
  4. Client Relationship Management:
    • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, providing strategic guidance and expert insights on pension plan management and optimization.
    • Build and maintain strong client relationships through regular communication, responsiveness, and proactive problem-solving.
    • Identify opportunities for expanding client engagements and delivering additional value-added services.
  5. Team Leadership and Development:
    • Provide mentorship and leadership to junior actuaries and analysts within the team.
    • Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development, encouraging skill enhancement and knowledge sharing.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to leverage expertise and resources in delivering comprehensive pension solutions.

Qualifications:

  • Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries (FSA) or equivalent professional designation.
  • Extensive experience (typically 8+ years) in actuarial roles focused on pensions, with a deep understanding of pension plan design, valuation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong technical proficiency in actuarial modeling software (e.g., AXIS, Prophet) and proficiency in programming languages (e.g., SQL, Python, R) is preferred.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial and demographic data and communicate findings effectively to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership abilities with experience in leading cross-functional teams and managing client relationships.
  • Strong commitment to professional ethics and integrity, with a demonstrated track record of upholding actuarial standards and best practices.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate effectively at all levels of the organization.
