The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has an exciting opportunity for a Full-Time Post Doctoral Associate. The Post Doctoral Associate will conduct research at the intersection of Embedded Systems and Health-tech, focusing on delivering cutting-edge technologies. Our lab is dedicated to advancing the understanding and practical application of advanced sensing systems, particularly for real-time health monitoring. Research activities will involve designing and prototyping sensing systems, optimizing solutions, and conducting point-of-care studies. The Post Doctoral Associate will develop new research techniques and tools to enhance sensor system performance and reliability. Under the supervision of managing staff, the Post Doctoral Associate will also explore the product-market fit studies as the team seeks technology commercialization.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities by collecting and analyzing data.
  • Create 3D models and provide accurate, detailed 2D drawings on mechanical and electrical parts and assemblies using SolidWorks.
  • Evaluates and optimizes designs through finite element analysis.
  • Develops and installs machine programs using automation software and custom coding languages.
  • Maintains updated knowledge of electronic packaging and material-component evaluation.
  • Conducts microfabrication in clean room environment.
  • Operates diverse microscope and materials characterization tools.
  • Develops minimum viable products (MVPs) for commercialization of the technologies.
  • Assists in preparation of proposals in lieu of commercialization of technologies.
  • Oversees and ensures the safe operation of laboratory equipment and materials.
  • Provide leadership and support for junior team members.
  • Adheres to the University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering.

Experience:

  • 3+ years of proven experience in finite element analysis of electro-mechanical systems with tools such as Ansys, Abaqus, or COMSOL.
  • 3+ years of proven experience of microfabrication in clean room environment.
  • 3+ years of materials synthesis in laboratory environment.
  • 3+ years of conducting materials characterization utilizing techniques such as SEM, TGA, DSC, FTIR, Raman Spectroscopy, and Optical profilometer.
  • Experience with hands-on building and testing prototypes.
  • Experience with prototype development in the context of health-tech is a must to have.
  • Experience in mold tool design, optimization and qualification is a plus to have.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

  • Excellent time management skills and ability to adhere to deadlines and deliverables.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to code in python and C++ languages is a must to have.
  • Working knowledge of wired and wireless data transmission protocols, such as Serial, I2C, WiFi, Bluetooth (BT), and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), is required.
  • Practical knowledge of 3D CAD (preferably SolidWorks).
  • Skilled in finite element analysis (preferably in electro-mechanical studies)
  • Must have an entrepreneurial mindset.
