The incumbent in this position is a per diem Registered Respiratory Care Practitioner who provides all types of respiratory service, care, therapy, and treatments to patients. The incumbent in this position aids in the diagnosis of disease states; and specializes in the evaluation, treatment, and care of patients with cardio-respiratory abnormalities and deficiencies. The incumbent treats and cares for patients from premature infants to geriatrics with specialized and various types of equipment. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.
EducationAssociate's degree from an accredited two year associate degree program in respiratory care Required andBachelor's degree Preferred Experience1-2 years Clinical experience in respiratory care including experience in intensive care units. Required Licenses and CertificationsCRT - Certified Respiratory Therapist Registry from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Upon Hire Required orRRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist Registry from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Upon Hire Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesWorking knowledge of human respiratory anatomy, physiology and pathology as related to respiratory care.Knowledge of the operation of respiratory care equipment and its application in a clinical setting.The ability to assess hazardous conditions related to respiratory care and take corrective action.The ability to work with patients from premature infants to geriatrics.Sets-up, applies, operates, monitors and troubleshoots all Respiratory Care and assigned equipment appropriate to any unit or area as requested. Functions in any area of Respiratory care, although encouraged to develop specialized skills. Performs PFT's and EKG's.Evaluates assigned patients receiving Respiratory Care for appropriateness of order to ensure optimal care; identifies hazards, precautions and contraindications for all procedures and services. Can assess the effects on or interactions with care currently being received by the patient.Performs and accurately documents all aspects of Care given to the patient.Acts as Charge Therapist in absence of Supervisor; distributes assignments, responds to changes in departmental needs, and represents department internally to staff and other organizational units. Acts as a Unit Team Leader when assigned, as needed.Assures quality of care given to patient and participates in Q.A. activities as delegated.Performs and participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.Assists in orientation of new employees and other hospital personnel as well as participates in and attends inservices, and such continuing education as deemed necessary to maintain skills and techniques.All Respiratory Care procedures are accurately and appropriately explained to the patient and/or family. Patient to receive home therapy are taught appropriate procedures.Exemplifies Guest and Staff Relations standards in all activities.Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
