Duties include, but are not limited to:


Is responsible for independently providing assessment and treatment interventions to inpatients and outpatients received through healthcare provider referrals and patient self referrals.

Guided by differential and movement diagnoses.

Performs examinations and evaluations of individuals who have or may develop impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions related to conditions of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and/or integumentary systems while considering the effects attributable to unique personal and environmental factors.

Interpreting findings from examination, diagnostic studies/medical tests and, during evaluation, select appropriate clinical tests and measures, and then integrate findings into the physical therapy plan of care for the full range of patient populations.

Establishing a diagnosis within the scope of physical therapy and identify the appropriate intervention to treat and/or refer to another provider for further consultation when needed.

Determining the physical therapy prognosis by incorporating examination findings with the patient's preferences for meaningful level of function to set clinically appropriate treatment goals and optimize outcomes.

Selecting appropriate equipment needed to substitute for loss of function or to substitute for limited function of individuals they treat.

Practicing autonomously, making recommendations and referrals to other medical specialties/services as clinically indicated during ongoing assessment of patients under their care.

Develops and provides individualized clinical training experiences for physical therapy students and residents in the established clinical education and residency programs at the facility.

Chronic Pain Specialist will be present in Pain clinic during physician hours (up to 10 hours/week) to provide collaboration with Pain clinic providers and offer same day patient evaluation/consultation services.

CPS will also provide evaluation and patient instruction for advanced pain modalities (alpha stim, etc.) that are not provided by general PT practitioners.

Educates/orients physician residents and fellows regarding physical therapy services in general and specifically as it relates to the PT interventions for spine conditions and chronic pain.

Participates as a clinical consultant member of the multidisciplinary PM&RS Chronic pain Team and the Pain Board.

Provides a minimum of one (1) in-service education program per year to the physical therapy department to keep staff updated on techniques.

Plans, implements, and reports on performance improvement activities relating to physical therapy services for spine/chronic pain interventions/outcomes.
Develops and administers competency tests for orthopedic and chronic pain related examinations and interventions. Mentors staff in the evaluation and treatment of chronic pain patients.
