Description

The Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Korean Studies, beginning in August 1, 2024. This is a 3-year position and may be renewable pending performance review. Applicants must have native or near-native fluency in Korean and English. PhD in Contemporary Korean Literary and Cultural studies or relevant field is required, ABD considered. Of particular interest are candidates whose research focuses on contemporary Korean popular culture; film and media studies; translation studies; and/or race, ethnicity or gender studies. Demonstrated experience or interest in developing digital humanities research and teaching is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be able to teach Korean language and culture at all levels, including Korean for heritage students, along with interdisciplinary courses in English, and engage in student outreach and activities to help develop Korean Studies at CMU. Teaching load is 2 2.

The successful candidate will benefit from a strong and growing support of interdisciplinary humanities research and teaching at Carnegie Mellon, including such initiatives as the Center for the Arts in Society, , and Askwith Kenner Global Languages and Cultures Room. They will also help build upon strong and growing interest in Korean language and culture studies, as the department seeks to expand its Korean Studies program.

Qualifications

PhD in Korean Literary and Cultural Studies or related field. ABD considered.
