Summary

Salary: $82,764 (Step 01) to $107,590 (Step 10);

NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.



Duties

As a Geologist within the Florence Bascom Geoscience Center some of your specific duties will include:

  • Leads and supports research avenues within the framework of existing USGS projects
  • Operate, manage, and collect scientific data using a GeoTek Multi-Sensor Core Logger (MSCL)-S whole core and split core logging and line-scan imaging system
  • Manage laboratory space and ensure the safety and compliance of all lab users and visitors
  • Utilize data analysis and visualization programs, to process, display, organize, and archive large volumes of core logger measurement data, images, and metadata
  • Sample, prepare, process, and preserve physical samples for analyses outside the scope of the core logging systems to achieve research goals
Physical Demands: During emergency response periods, training of personnel on new equipment, or field work, the scientist may be expected to hike distances of several kilometers over uneven terrain while carrying equipment. Field work may require working in remote field sites with limited to no services.

Work Environment: Some work takes place in office or laboratory settings with adequate heat, light and ventilation. Office conditions do not require special safety precautions; field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, and hazardous conditions such as exposure to extreme temperature, noxious or toxic gasses, ice or flooding.
