Job Purpose

Honda's Sustainability and Business Development Business Unit is responsible for delivering Honda's Triple Zero goals of zero carbon emitted from products and operations, zero carbon emitted from energy used throughout the entire value chain including product in-use, and zero use of raw resources by recycling and sourcing sustainable materials for all new products. Electric vehicles are key to achieving this vision, and establishing Honda's role in the electricity ecosystem is the core reason for this position.

The Charging Solution Senior Project Engineer is a key contributor on the team that will execute initiatives to provide new revenue streams to Honda and create new value to our vehicle customer using vehicle-grid integration, including managed EV charging (V1G), bidirectional charging (V2G or Vehicle-to-Grid, and V2H or Vehicle-to-Home), and Home Energy Management.

The Charging Solution Senior Project Engineer is responsible for leading large, complex projects to develop energy management services and will interact with internal and external teams to develop the necessary hardware, software, communications, and UX to deliver the services to the customer. Working with the energy business team and technical standards experts, this role will define the energy service use cases, draw sequence diagrams, and envision the UX elements that are needed to execute the use cases. This role requires a working understanding of EV charging hardware and server/communication systems. This role demands a working understanding of the US electric utility industry as well as the codes, standards, and regulations that influence it. This role will work interactively and maintain relationships with electric utilities, ISOs, State Public Utilities Commissions, State Energy Commissions, Resource Aggregators, and other energy system related stakeholders. This role will manage Honda's participation in industry leading V2X pilot programs with EV charging companies, electric utilities, and resource aggregators.

In addition, the Charging Solution Senior Project Engineer coordinates testing of Honda's EVSEs and competitive benchmarking of commercially available EVSEs and other DER products in Honda's EVSE Laboratory. The Senior Project Engineer supports other Honda engineering and business personnel to develop testing procedures and plans, conducts the tests, and reports the results. The Senior Project Engineer provides input to the acquisition of laboratory equipment that supports Honda's EVSE product development and validation processes. The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for all aspects of testing processes, including maintaining a calibration history for all related laboratory equipment, coordination of test scheduling and planning supported by Honda Technical Personnel in the related laboratories. The Senior Project Engineer works with other Honda Engineers to compile and report test results in concise and easy to understand formats. The Senior Project Engineer will be responsible for organizing and maintaining data repositories for all Test Plans, Test Procedures, Equipment Calibration history and maintaining a safe and orderly workspace.

Executing on this responsibility requires frequent coordination and review of wide-ranging information, along with regular communication with external business partners providers, HM, Product Planning, Service, Quality, Sales, Finance, Customer Experience, Law, Honda Development & Manufacturing America (HDMA), Accessory Development Division (ADD), Honda Japan R&D and other pertinent business units.

Key Accountabilities

Charging Hardware and Energy Service Market Analysis (20%):

  • Conduct thorough analysis of all aspects of EV customer needs/wants & charging hardware and energy services, and its competitive market situation to ensure the most competitive charging hardware line-ups and support department, division, and corporate goals.

Charging and Energy Solution Planning (20%):

  • Based on the comprehensive market research above, create charging hardware and energy service strategy and execution plan associated with Honda's EV product lineup and strategy. Evaluate marketability, assess penetration rate, pricing and product life cycle management closely align with auto sales, service and other stakeholders.
  • Define product specification to meet customer experience goal and product strategy.

Product and Solution Development and Sales Launch (50%):

  • In line with product planning plan defined above, be a product owner of charging hardware and responsible to develop the product and meet launch schedule closely working with engineering, testing, procurement, legal, auto sales, service, supplier and other stakeholders. Create development and launch proposal and gain approval by corporate executive evaluator.
  • Be a product owner of energy service (V1G and V2X) and responsible to develop software and meet launch schedule closely working with IT, delivery and software partner stakeholders. Create development and launch proposal and gain approval by corporate executive evaluator.

Global Strategy Alignment and Communication (10%):

  • Closely work with Honda global office, align charging hardware and energy service solution roadmap to meet Honda carbon neutral and sustainability goals.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

Education

  • Electrical Engineering or related bachelor's degree and/or equivalent work experience. Master degree is plus Minimum

Experience

  • 4-6 years of EVSE Development and Testing work experience or equivalent
  • Hands-on experience with testing and evaluating electrical equipment to national and international standards
  • 2-3 years of hands-on experience with EVSE Test Equipment, EV and Grid Simulators, Bi-Directional Power Supplies, Grid-Interactive Emulators and related software test suites
  • 2-3 years experience with basic electronic and electrical laboratory tools (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power quality analyzers, signal generators etc.) for low and high voltage AC and DC power.
  • Previous experience working, and interfacing with International Standards Development Organizations including JIS, IEEE, UL, NFPA, NIST, ASTM, IEC/ISO and others.
  • Experience with relevant EVSE-EV communications standards, specifically the DIN 70121, ISO 15118-x and IEC 61851-x standards

Desired Skills

  • Electronics Laboratory: Knowledge of Electrical and Electronic Laboratory equipment that enables comprehensive evaluation of electrical and communications systems used to conduct EVSE-EV development, testing and validation.
  • Knowledge of digital communications development and testing tools which support evaluation of communications from a dispatch source (e.g. Utility or Market Operator dispatch to Resource Aggregator to Honda communications domain including Honda Server, the EVSE and the EV.)
  • Cyber Security: Knowledge of network attacks and the defenses used; ability to defend and prevent electronic threats, theft and attacks.
  • Cybersecurity Risk Management: Knowledge of tools, techniques, approaches and processes of cybersecurity risk management; ability to ensure organizational network operation and minimize risks and negative effects of cybersecurity threats, attacks and principles for remediation.
  • Communication: Ability to effectively use presentation tools and techniques to ensure clear technical explanations and support for stakeholder understanding of complex charging topics; ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience. Ability to explain important details as they relate to the basic value of the product or service.
