Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Financial Systems & Reporting and the Accounting Manager, this dual role requires expertise in both accounting practices and financial systems.

The position will be responsible for assisting in the maintenance and management of current financial systems, as well as compiling financial information, processing journal entries, reconciling reports and financial data for the University.



Accounting Focus


  • Supports the development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures to ensure controls over transactional processing.
  • Makes recommendations to continuously improve the financial statement close process.
  • Prepares bank and balance sheet account reconciliations and subsidiary ledger reconciliations to the General Ledger and works to resolve differences variances. Ensures reconciling items are resolved on a timely basis.
  • Assists with month-end and year-end close process, including the preparation of journal entries with adequate support.
  • Uses various software application to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Contributes to the preparation and reviews financial information for various surveys and analyses to ensure consistency with information from the University's general ledger
  • Actively participates in the month and year-end close process, including the preparation of journal entries and account analysis with adequate support.
  • Actively participates and assists in the preparation of the year-end financial statements in accordance with US GAAP and assists in the preparation of items requested for the external audit.
  • Addresses and responds to ad-hoc management requests and other questions from University departments.
Financial Systems Focus* Assists in the set-up and maintenance of the University's Lawson (General Ledger) system
  • Develop training documents and provide training and support to staff on financial system functionalities and best practices.
  • Reconciles daily interfaces, including but not limited to the student information system and Lawson.
  • Reviews and processes Financial Application security requests.
  • Performs monthly reconciliations and quarterly audits to ensure security is assigned correctly
  • Manages the month-end close and allocation processes in Lawson.
  • Acts as a source of functional support: Performs preliminary troubleshooting and analysis of issues and problems; identifies and proposes business process and/or system changes/enhancements to address ongoing problems.
  • Serves as the division data steward in maintaining the division wide PC inventory as well as coordinating the semi-annual review of all PCs to ensure compliance with PII (Personally Identifiable Information) policy.
  • Drives information process improvements throughout the finance organization, which will result in increased productivity, better financial controls and/or superior business decisions.
  • Conducts system audits to ensure data accuracy and security.
  • Participates in implementations and upgrades as resources are needed.
  • Collaborates with IT and finance staff to meet business requirements.
  • Performs Ad Hoc reporting as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Information Systems, or Finance related field and one-two years of related experience.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel) a must.
  • The individual should have functional knowledge of financial accounting and the ability to understand financial statements.
  • Must possess strong analytical and logical skills and be capable of providing business solutions to opportunities and challenges as they arise.
  • Proven ability to work as a team member and work effectively with other functional experts in the Finance division.
  • Ability to take initiative, work with little supervision and solve problems independently.
  • Proficient in project and time management skills with the ability to prioritize or re- prioritize a variety of duties.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal with various levels of management as the position requires consistent contact and follow up with individuals across the University. The candidate must be a self-starter for this reason.
  • The position requires a detail-oriented individual with above-average organizational skills.

  • Must be very familiar with financial systems and use of supporting software programs.
  • Proficiency in information/database management and basic computer programming the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Sharepoint, Teams).
  • Advanced Excel skills to create and interpret large sets of data, such as experience with pivot tables and reporting, vlookup, data sorting, data filters, formula functions.
  • Knowledge of Lawson and WebFocus/Business Intelligence is highly desirable.
