GENERAL FUNCTION:

Responsible for the development of fabric properties and the engineering of fabrics and fabric processes to meet the performance requirements of uniforms and accessories.

Conducts and/or directs the laboratory testing to identify those fabrics that meet the specifications for new product development.

Works closely with suppliers to provide technical design assistance to engineer new fabrics, as well as trouble shoot problems encountered during the testing and development process.

Develops written specifications for fabrics and develops testing specifications for performance testing of fabrics based upon their physical properties as defined by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and AATCC (American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists)

Provide support with the knowledge, expertise, and capability to understand, investigate, and evaluate the physical and performance properties of fibers, yarns, textiles, soiling, and related materials.

Analyzes and interprets laboratory findings and evaluates fabrics. Support the planning, documentation, implementation, data collection, analysis, and reporting for laboratory testing.

Assist the USG with textile testing standards and procedures by performing general textile sample cutting and test preparation, weave patterns, types, plies, deniers, pick count, air permeability testing, fiber melting point and fiber identification, and color shade analyses.

Shall understand material tare, burst and hydrostatic strength testing, thread construction and twist measurement, textiles laundering inspection, textiles weathering, fading and color fastness testing, textiles heat aging testing, burn testing, resistance to abrasion testing, tensile strength and elongation analyses
Must have experience using hand-held and stand-alone dimensional measurement equipment

Assist in the development of test plans and new and improved processes, as well as solving problems in the identification and testing of a wide range of physical and chemical properties of textiles.

Assist in conducting laboratory tests on basic materials/physical properties, colorfastness, flammability and protective clothing, fiber and chemical analysis, thermal and moisture vapor resistance, oil/water repellency, anti-microbial/anti-bacterial, footwear and soling, laces, threads, zippers, and fasteners, leathers and synthetics, and near-infrared.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certifications/Experience/Skills:


Must have a BA/MA Degree in a related field and at least three years of experience in the respective technical / professional discipline being performed, OR, Seven years of directly related experience within Textile Technology or related field.

Must be able to work independently and apply the proper procedures and processes related to their area of expertise.

Must have a detailed knowledge and familiarization with the American Society of Testing and Measurement (ASTM) International and American Association of Textile Chemist and Colorist (AATCC) technical manuals to support manufacturing, quality assurance, material selection, and testing activities.

Must be able to travel to manufacturers, industry trade shows, and meetings as required.

Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access), Microsoft Internet Explorer, and other standard (Customer specified) applications.)


Must be able to transport self to various facility sites, as required. If using own motor vehicle, must possess a valid driver's license and proof of insurance.

Must have a solid knowledge of fabric, including wovens, knits, and nonwovens and the effect that production processes may have on the physical properties of the fabric.

Must have a solid knowledge of the production and manufacture of textiles.
