The NODs are responsible for staffing decisions, addressing nursing concerns, practice issues, patient and family issues, clinical emergencies, interdepartmental communication, equipment and/or supply procurement, etc.

The NODs are responsible for reviewing all prospective admissions against Inter-Qual admission criteria and assist with ensuring the admission process is complete and timely, including all inter-ward transfers, working collaboratively with the Medical and Administrative Officer of the Day (MOD, AOD).

The NODs act as liaisons among various patient areas, Utilization Review, Outpatient Clinics, Care in the Community, and the Charge Nurses of the inpatient Units, MOD, AOD, for the purposes of providing comprehensive care to Veterans as safely and efficiently as possible.

The NOD provides coaching and counselling to the nursing staff to resolve problems both with conduct or clinical issues. The NOD is responsible to evaluate and meet staffing needs and approve overtime accordingly.

The NOD works closely with the Nurse Managers to ensure quality care for Veterans and to provide input into performance and conduct of staff.

The NOD is responsible to gather facts regarding events that occur during their tour of duty.

  • Maintains nursing operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing operational and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Examines and interprets standards of the profession. Assumes a supportive role in fostering accountability in others for professional practice, performance improvement.
  • Rounds on clinical areas to identify needs, ensure quality of patient care, and performs internal and external customer service
  • Enforces Medical Center policies and procedures
  • Ensures appropriate reports are initiated for any situations that impacts operations of the facility to include staff or patient injuries and sentinel events
  • Facilitation of smooth movement of patients in inter-facility VA transfers and transfers to and from the community setting through coordination of transportation arrangements
  • Analyzes data and reports information in accordance with standards of care to identify need for change, new equipment, and further staff education to minimize risk and ensure effectiveness of clinical quality improvement.
  • Maintains proficiency in existing and emerging technologies and clinical application.
  • Uses sound judgment in problem solving and decision making
  • Responds to all codes or nurse alerts on campus
  • Collaborates with Administration, Service Chiefs, Medical Center committee(s), major stakeholders, and clinical staff to ensure safe facility operations
  • Promotes a non-punitive, safety-conscious work environment by serving as a resource and advocate for the protection of staff, patient, and family.
  • Establishes and maintains effective collegial relationships with all levels of staff
  • Participates in local level activities related to process and facility improvements
  • Assumes a guidance role in utilizing problem-solving methodologies to resolve system and/or process problems that impact on patient care or staff resources
  • Takes a lead role in initiating effective action in emergencies. Teaches others to anticipate and recognize potential emergent situations such as patients with disturbed behavior, life-threatening emergencies, internal or external disaster.
