Job Description
  • Prepares Federal Railroad Administration inspection reports, including reports of the violations and collects enough evidence to back up and support attorneys in event of a prosecution.
  • Investigates complaints involving unsafe conditions of track or other subject areas of responsibility and interviews complainants, railroad officials, and any other required parties to assist in a thorough investigation of the complaint.
  • Conducts safety meetings and determines the need for training sessions for railroad employees regarding proper and safe inspection and maintenance procedures for track and other roadway facilities.
  • Participates in investigations of critical train accidents that result in serious injury to people or property damage that occurs on the railroad line of any carrier engaged in interstate or foreign commerce; determines probable cause of an accident or incident and whether any Federal regulations were violated.
  • Assists in training candidates for acceptance into the State Participation Program for track inspection, evaluates the progress of the candidates, and provides detailed progress reports.
  • Maintains contact with officials of railroads, rail labor organizations, and other Federal, State and local government employees in connection with track inspection and investigative issues.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills Must have both of the following license/certification:
  • U.S. Army Locomotive Engineer/Conductor License. This complies with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Code of Federal Regulation, Part 420.
  • The Department of the Army Certification that meets the requirements of UFC to be registered as a Certified Railroad Track Inspector.
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills Preferred experience with the following:
  • Inspect and monitor functions of railroad track and structures in an assigned territory to ensure compliance with Federal safety and health regulations.
  • Create and lead implementation of an inspection program to provide the greatest coverage of the railroad track network.
  • Knowledge of track geometry, curvature, alignment of the track, smoothness, and the cross-level of the two rails, how to measure this, and detects locates, and evaluates deviations.
  • Performs on-ground inspections of defects to determine the how serious the problems are, and determines the best way to correct them.
  • Communicates track conditions to appropriate management so repairs can be scheduled.
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $ $94770

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
