Under the general direction of the Counseling Center Director and Associate Director for Clinical Services, this position requires a variety of skills involving case management, crisis intervention, intake and triage assessment, individual and group counseling, outreach, consultation and administration. The Case Manager will primarily maintain and monitor a clinical case management system to provide continuity of care for clients. In addition, the Case Manager will also provide ongoing counseling related services to students. Case management may include meeting with clients who are in need of intensive outpatient or inpatient mental health services, hospital visits, obtaining external referral services for students, maintaining database of community providers, treatment planning and coordination of care, including follow up communication and/or meetings with clients or community providers. This position requires excellence in clinical case management service delivery including crisis coverage, individual and group counseling and emergency intervention.

Duties include on-call counselor duties and serving as a resource to various constituencies on campus in an effort to enhance student life. The Case Manager handles the delicate task of contacting legal guardians of students and coordinating post hospitalization plans along with regular follow-up with external providers and other University of Miami stakeholders. Some evenings and weekends are required. Through coordination with the Associate Director and Director, a portion of this position's responsibilities will include direct clinical services.

The Case Manager is expected to perform his/her duties conscientiously and responsibly; to adhere to high personal standards of behavior with students, colleagues, members of the University community and clients of the University; and in a manner consistent with the ethics of his/her own profession. This person is expected to keep himself/herself informed of current research and professional developments in his/her professional field.

Case Manager Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the management and coordination of the Counseling Center's clinical case management system, including the maintenance and expansion of a database of referral resources and community services.
  • Collaborate with UM Counseling Center "UMCC" staff, community providers and other campus constituencies in the planning, implementation, and coordination of care of UMCC clients.
  • Assist students with mental health services coordination and needs, including, but not limited to, referral to community resources, and facilitate access to medical care. This includes coordination and facilitation of hospitalizations and mental health treatment through and post discharge as well as maintenance of a hospitalizations database.
  • Follow up to ensure that clients are appropriately assessed, successfully referred, and compliant with treatment recommendations.
  • Initiate and maintain ongoing liaison relationships with community health providers, services, hospitals, and other resources.
  • Provide daytime and on‐call crisis services.
  • Provide emergency/crisis care in the form of triage services.
  • Collaborate and consult with key stakeholders on and off‐campus to develop and maintain comprehensive and multidisciplinary mental health care for students.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, students, family members and student guardians.
  • Requires some evening and weekend work.
  • Provide outreach, consultation and emergency/crisis services.

Clinical and Other Responsibilities

  • Complete records punctually according to record keeping/report writing procedures that are currently operative at the Counseling Center and required by legal and ethical regulations.
  • Submit all service reports, or other communications involving the clinical operations of the Counseling Center which are intended for persons, departments, or agencies outside of the Counseling Center for review and approval of the Director or Associate Clinical Director of the Counseling Center before transmitting them.
  • Review on a regular basis the nature and state of individual caseloads with the Associate Director for Clinical Services or Director.
  • Consult with the Associate Director for Clinical Services or Director about clients who are suicidal, homicidal, severely depressed, anxious, acting out or showing a high probability for acting out, psychotic or borderline psychotic, manifesting a high degree of psychopathology or expressing such extreme problems in living, whereby good clinical judgment would dictate initiating the supervisory process.
  • Preserve the confidentiality and trust of clients, while at the same time promote the best interest of the University and adhere to its recognized rules of procedure. Whenever it is ethically and legally permissible and in the best interests of the client or the University; cooperates with other appropriate staff of the University in cases or issues of mutual concern.
  • All Counseling Center Staff are required to participate in educational, outreach and prevention programs originating from the Center. This may take the form of developing such programs oneself or accepting assignments to supervise or participate in such programs. UMCC staff are required to regularly consult with and keep the Assistant Director for Outreach, Director, or Associate Director informed about participation in such activities. The person holding this position is expected to lead a minimum of three such programs each semester and at least one after-hours program in the fall and spring semesters. These programs include activities originating from and under the supervision of the Counseling Center's Associate Director for Outreach or staff who intend to bring the Center's services and the skills of the professional staff to members of the student body and the University community. Establish liaison relationships with relevant student clubs and campus departments.
  • Participate annually in at least one Division of Student Affairs activity such as volunteering for graduation ceremonies.
  • Responsibilities will include direct clinical service
    • Provide short-term individual and group psychotherapy
    • Provide intake and crisis related services
    • Provide, as needed, supervision related services to trainees
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written/oral/interpersonal communications skills, flexibility and ability to collaborate well with others.
  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical case management, crisis intervention and management, and student development theories in the context of higher education.
  • Demonstrated expertise in working with severe psychopathology.
  • Demonstrated skill in working well under pressure while prioritizing and managing multiple clinical situations and coordinating efforts as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment and expertise in working with diverse populations and/or underrepresented college student populations.
  • Proficient in a variety of computer software applications (e.g. Titanium, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with providing time‐limited counseling and psychotherapy, evaluation, diagnosis, and crisis intervention.
  • Evidence of organizational understanding and an ability to work collaboratively.
  • Experience in directing, organizing, and prioritizing workload to meet required deadlines and department objectives.
  • Skill in preparing comprehensive and in‐depth analysis of complex, sensitive, and multi‐faceted issues, particularly under tight time constraints.

Education Requirements

  • Master's or advanced degree in counseling/psychology/social work

  • Must be licensed or license-eligible as a mental health professional in the State of Florida. Supervision for registered social work and mental health counseling interns provided.

Work Experience Requirements

  • Internship experience in a university counseling center or other supervised experience in college student mental health is preferred.
  • Evidence of ability to provide leadership and problem‐solving skills while carrying case management responsibilities within a higher education setting.
  • Experience in management and coordination of clinical case management systems.
