The City of Irvine is seeking a detail-oriented and dedicated individual to join our team as a Payroll Technician. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll and timekeeping duties and demonstrate knowledge with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This entry-level position is an excellent opportunity to build a career in payroll administration.

Your Impact

Reviews biweekly employee time sheets for pay variances for sick, vacation, compensatory and holiday time, overtime and extended leaves; enters alternate work schedules; resolves timekeeping errors.Prepares routine correspondence on a variety of payroll and timekeeping matters; provides assistance and information to department timekeeper liaisons. Reviews pre-list for accuracy, makes corrections as needed. Assists processing payroll, generates paychecks, direct deposits and payroll reports, takes into consideration FLSA requirements, tax and payroll deductions, fringe benefit calculations, etc. Balances payroll and disburses reports. Prepares journal entries to adjust general ledger accounts.Reviews Personnel Action Forms and other employee deduction and contribution forms for completeness. Performs special timesheet input and assists in processing special check runs, e.g. vacation and compensatory time buy-back checks and sick leave conversions. Calculates retroactive payments, including the impact of overtime and leave time.Builds data transfer files following payroll runs and reviews for accuracy. Sends data files and report tax information to appropriate agencies with each payroll.Prepares batches for payments of payroll liabilities, such as garnishments, donations and union dues. Reconciles insurance billings with City reports and prepares accounts payable requests for payment. Provides accounting for employee benefit accounts. Maintains individual balances, allocates interest and reconciles to the General Ledger. Maintains files of pension plan investments and prepares related portion of State Controllers Report as needed.Maintains knowledge of FLSA requirements, overtime calculations, shift differential payments, annual increases, collective bargaining increases, wage garnishments, and retirement calculations.Reconciles biweekly and quarterly payroll general ledger accounts for accuracy.Provides backup to Payroll Analyst positions.Find additional information in the Accounting Technician job description.Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree in accounting or related field.Two years' experience in payroll, accounting, bookkeeping or related field.Basic knowledge of computerized spreadsheet applications required.May require a valid California driver's license.Best Fit
