Shenandoah University's Conservatory is accepting applications for an Assistant Professor of Music, Vocal Pedagogy. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.
Shenandoah Conservatory seeks a dynamic and collaborative pedagogue to join its Vocal/Choral Division and contribute to the ongoing success of the MM and DMA Voice Pedagogy degree programs. This full-time career- contract track appointment will begin August 15, 2024.
The successful candidate will:
Oversee doctoral research documents in voice pedagogy
Teach graduate courses in voice pedagogy, preferably
Anatomy & Function of the Singing Voice
Technology in the Voice Studio (research/teaching-based technology and/or live sound/recording studio technology)
Teach applied lessons to voice students; and
Serve as coursework advisor to DMA in Vocal Pedagogy students.
About the Vocal Pedagogy Program: The Voice Pedagogy Program at Shenandoah Conservatory is a thriving community committed to merging scientific research with intuitive knowledge to support singers of all styles. Students learn a functional approach to singing and teaching that meets the needs of clients from diverse backgrounds in a way that honors their culture, identity, and artistic goals. Coursework includes voice physiology, acoustics, technology, motor learning theory and cognitive science, repertoire, and methods for both CCM and classical styles. Shenandoah Conservatory was the first institution in the United States to offer a Master of Music in Contemporary Commercial Music Voice Pedagogy and we are the only institution in the United States with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice Pedagogy that is open to singers of all styles. Our
graduates are teaching at universities and private studios throughout the world, presenting at conferences, and publishing papers in leading journals.
Required Skills
The applicant will hold a MFA, Ph.D., D.M.A., EdD, or similar terminal degree, have a history of successful applied voice studio teaching, experience teaching pedagogy courses, and a record of scholarship in the form of presentations, workshops, and/or publications.
Required Experience:
1. 10+ years experience teaching private voice lessons in an academic and/or independent studio setting
2. Have a record of presentations for national conferences and professional organizations and/or publications in books and/or journals
3. A collaborative spirit and willingness to support multiple pedagogical approaches, while creating a brave space for challenging discussions; and
4. Ability to guide doctoral dissertations/final projects.
We are especially interested in meeting candidates with strengths in any of the following areas:
1. 10+ years experience teaching CCM styles
2. Experience teaching anatomy and physiology
3. Ability to teach acoustics and applied studio technology (VoceVista, etc.)
4. Experience with live sound and/or recording studio technology
