The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical health physics expertise in support of the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) Safety Office/Radiation Protection Branch.

Serve as the Radiation Safety Officer, the primary resource required to possess or obtain expertise in all areas of radiation protection.

Duties

  • Develops, implements and manages the radiation protection program for AFTAC.
This includes over 1,000 personnel,


an array of airborne platforms, 10 detachments, four operating locations and more than 60 unmanned equipment locations around the world.

Leads and sets priorities and tasks for radiation protection personnel assigned to the Safety Office.

  • Provides expert, comprehensive radiation protection oversight for the AFTAC enterprise.
The AFTAC enterprise includes an array of airborne platforms, a large radiochemistry analytical laboratory, a clean room complex, 10 detachments, four operating locations and more than 60 unmanned equipment locations around the world that support a global sampling, analysis and monitoring mission.

  • Provides day to day leadership for a team of radiation technicians in the implementation of the AFTAC radiation protection program.
Determines priorities and directs team in performance of a variety of radiological surveillance, radiation safety, and health physics auditing functions in all radiation areas.

  • Ensures proper radiation protection training and monitoring.
This includes a dosimetry program for over 1,000 personnel, an array of airborne platforms, 10 detachments, four operating locations and more than 60 unmanned equipment locations around the world.

  • Performs scientific assessments.
Makes recommendations 06 concerning corrective actions for identified weaknesses or deficiencies in radiation protection and/or nuclear safety programs involving sample collection, chemical processing, mixed and hazardous waste, decommissioning, and construction.

  • Represents AFTAC for radiation protection issues while interacting with a variety of installation and functional area
organizations.

Develops relationships with Installation RSOs at Air Combat Command (ACC) and Air Mobility Command (AMC) installations where sampling aircraft and aircrews are based, and at ACC, AMC, U.S.

Air Forces in Europe (USAFE), and Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) locations where sampling aircraft might be required to recover or at places where samples may have to transit.
