Duties

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

The APN is directly responsible to the designated manager in the assigned area. The APN utilizes advanced practice nursing skills and knowledge in an independent manner in areas of patient care, education, research, and consultation. The APN collaborates with the interdisciplinary health care team to ensure continuity of care and to maximize the patient's response to treatment.

The APN practices according to practice guidelines established for the specific practice area. The scope of practice for the APN includes prescribing medications and devices. The APN functions as an advocate for patients in meeting their unique physical and psychological needs.

Role responsibilities and accountabilities also include demonstration of expert knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of patients served in the assigned area of practice. This knowledge includes understanding changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric population.

In addition, the APN is accountable and responsible for possessing the knowledge and skills to:

  • *Communicate and interact appropriately and courteously with all internal and external customers.
  • *Maintain confidentiality of electronic, written, and/or verbal patient/employee information.
  • *Demonstrate working practices that include adherence to Infection Control standards and the safe use and operation of equipment.
