Brightlingsea, Essex, United States Kent & Essex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority Full time

Are you passionate about protecting our marine environment and ensuring sustainable fishing

practices? Do you have a strong maritime background, enjoy working at sea and leadership

skills? If so, this might be the perfect opportunity for you

As a First Mate with Kent and Essex IFCA, you will be a vital part of our dedicated team,

working to safeguard our coastal waters. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the Skipper in the operation and maintenance of our patrol vessels.
  • Conducting fishery inspections and enforcement activities to ensure compliance with

    regulations.
  • Participating in data collection and research to support marine conservation efforts.
  • Leading and mentoring crew members to ensure efficient and safe operations.

What we're looking for:

To join us, you must have enthusiasm for the marine environment and a knowledge of marine

issues and the fishing industry together with a strong drive to enforce rules protecting fish

stocks, marine habitats and marine wildlife. You will have had proven experience in handling

boats and RIBs at sea with the confidence and ability to do so in the absence of the skipper.

You'll combine this with good communication skills, an organised approach and a gift for

teamwork and collaboration. Crucially, you must be ready to work unsocial hours (e.g. weekends

and at night) and tackle physically demanding duties in a challenging marine environment. We'll

expect you to meet the standard required to obtain a Seafarers Medical Certificate (ENG1), to

be able to locate, board and inspect fishing vessels both on the shore and at sea.

The first round interviews for this post will be held 7 December 2023 in Brightlingsea, Essex
