Duties

The Pathways Recent Graduate Program is for recently graduated or graduating individuals who are looking for developmental experiences in the Federal Government intended to promote possible careers in the civil service. Recent Graduates will serve on this appointment for one year. During the first year the selectee will perform developmental activities designed to help them acquire the competencies of the target position in which they may be placed upon completion of the program. Participants who successfully complete the Recent College Graduates Program may be eligible for conversion to the target position on a permanent or term (more than one to four years in duration) basis without further competition. As a Park Ranger your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Develops and presents a variety of interpretive programs including orientation talks, conducted walks, and demonstrations to a variety of general public audiences or school groups. Initiates or assists with development or revision of interpretive materials, such as brochures, guidebooks, handouts, and exhibits.
  • Prepares and conducts on- and off-site environmental education programs for a variety of audiences.
  • Assists with recruitment and training of candidates for a volunteer program and assists in developing volunteer work projects and schedules for visitor services.
  • Assists with the management of wildlife-dependent recreation opportunities such as hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, wildlife photography, environmental education and/or interpretation as described in the Refuge Improvement Act of 1997 and with secondary recreational uses such as camping, picnicking, berry picking, boating, and horseback riding in support of one or more of the primary uses.
  • Communicates effectively with visitors and staff by writing or through interpretive activities that aid in implementing the refuge's outreach program.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification. Minimum Qualification [GS-05]
  1. I have 1 year of specialized experience that was equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade-level in the Federal service.Specialized experience may include: 1) Park guide or tour leader; 2) Law enforcement or investigative work (parkrelated); 3) Archeological or historical preservation research work; 4) Forestry and/or fire management work in a park,recreation, or conservation area; 5) Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development andimplementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. I have completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours ofrelated course work-- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology,park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, businessadministration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to themanagement and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may beaccepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful jobperformance in the position to be filled.   3. I have a combination of specialized experience as described in response A above and education as described in response B above. (Determine the percentage of qualifying specialized experience you possess and determine the percentage of qualifying education you possess. Add the two percentages together. GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Education Status: Completed all requirements for an associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within the previous two (2) years; or individuals who, due to military service obligation, were precluded from applying to the Recent Graduates Program during any portion of the 2-year eligibility period described above shall have a full 2-year period of eligibility upon release or discharge from active duty. This eligibility period cannot extend more than 6 years from the date on which the requirements for the academic course of study were met.

Recent Graduate appointments may not exceed two years. Recent Graduates who satisfactorily complete all the Program requirements may be non-competitively converted to a Term or Permanent appointment in the competitive service.
