The 20th Fighter Wing, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., provides combat ready airpower and Airmen to meet any challenge, anytime, anywhere.

The wing is capable of meeting all operational requirements worldwide, maintains a state of combat readiness and operates as the host unit at Shaw by providing facilities, personnel and material.

Responsibilities

DUTY 1:
Provides aerospace medical care to flyers, missile crews, and others with special standards of medicalqualifications. Implements policies and procedures and prepares directives governing flight medicine,preventive medicine, and occupational medicine. Manages disorders and injuries unique to flying orspecial programs.

Provides complex aeromedical decision making to include aeromedical dispositionsfor flying/special operational duty (includes drafting and reviewing:

aeromedical waivers; signinginitial, periodic, Duty Not Involving Flying, Return-to-Flying Duty Limiting Condition Reports;Notification of Air Force Member's Qualification Status (AF Performs flying and other specialduty physical examinations, Pre-and Post-Deployment health assessments as well as PreventativeHealth Assessments (PHA).

Addresses, manages, and documents medical issues pertaining to thePersonnel Reliability Program (PRP), Security Clearances, Overseas Clearances, Pre-Confinementevaluations, Line of Duty Determination (LOD), and Occupational and fitness for duty medicalevaluations - all of which will be performed for active duty, reserve, and ANG members, as well aseligible civilian, DoD and dependent beneficiaries.

Evaluates living and working environment to detectand control health hazards and prevent disease and injury within the Aerospace arena. Provides directprimary outpatient care to patients. Performs minor ambulatory surgical procedures. Orders andinterprets diagnostic and testing procedures to include laboratory and radiological examinations.

Coordinates with facility and community resources to provide multi-disciplinary comprehensive careto all patients, taking into account factors such as new and/or emerging procedures and techniquesand patient's personal history, environment, and mission as well as information gained throughdiagnostic test.

Provides advice by telephone and/or in person to other physicians, non-physicianproviders, nursing, and para-professional staff on the care of patients with urgent, emergent, andnon-urgent medical problems.

Documents clinical encounters and patient instructions into the medicalrecord via current electronic medical record system and prepares appropriate clinical narrativesummaries for both civilian and military occupational programs, to include aeromedical waiver casesthat are submitted for higher headquarter review.

Advises and educates medical and dental staff ontreatment for flying and special operational personnel.

DUTY 2:

Serves as the Primary Care Provider providing comprehensive outpatient care to military membersserving as aircrew or in special duty occupations and their family members with care, ranging fromnewborn to geriatric age, presenting with complex and interdependent acute and chronic conditions.

These conditions include, but are not limited to the management of:

hypertension, cardiovasculardisease, asthma, inflammatory and non-inflammatory arthritic conditions, cancerdiagnosis/management/surveillance, physical and/or extremity injuries, as well as acute and chronicpsychiatric/psychological disorders.

Provides Pre-and Post-Deployment health assessments as well asPreventive Health Assessments (PHA).

Addresses, manages, and documents medical issues pertainingto the Personnel Reliability Program (PRP), Security Clearances, Overseas Clearances, Pre-Confinement evaluations, Line of Duty Determination (LOD), and Occupational and fitness for dutymedical evaluations, all of which will be performed for active duty, reserve, and National Guardmembers as well as eligible civilian, DoD, and dependent beneficiaries.

Provides direct primaryoutpatient care to include gynecologic, pediatric, and geriatric care.

Performs ambulatory surgicalprocedures including but not limited to:
casting/splinting, suturing and excisional skin biopsies.

(Therange ofoutpatient procedures that may be performed include, trigger point injection, joint aspirationand injections, joint splinting and casting, multiple layer skin closures, etc.) Orders and interpretsdiagnostic and testing procedures to include laboratory and radiological examinations.

Ensuresappropriate follow up and documentation of all clinical and diagnostic procedures IAW theAccreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), The Joint Commission (TJC), andHealth Services Inspection (HSI) guidelines.

Independently formulates full treatment andmanagement regimens based on sound diagnoses consistent with current and/or evidence basedclinical practice guidelines. Evaluate and medically clear patients for Aeromedical Evacuation.

Coordinates with facility and community resources to provide multi-disciplinary comprehensive careto all patients, taking into account factors such as new and/or emerging procedures and techniquesand the patient's personal history, as well as information gained through diagnostic tests.

Providesadvice by telephone and/or in person to other physicians, non-physician providers, and nursing and para-professional staff on the care of patients with urgent, emergent, and non-urgent medicalproblems.

Documents clinical encounters and patient instructions into the medical record via currentelectronic medical record system, and prepares appropriate clinical narrative summaries for bothcivilian and military occupational programs.


DUTY 3:
Provides clinical and administrative leadership to the Flight Medicine Primary Care Manager (PCM)team. Facilitates and manages the full spectrum of professional and patient care activities for the PCMteam.

Evaluates and analyzes how the team provides care through a continuum, thereby facilitatingthe achievement of efficient, high quality, and cost effective healthcare.

Guides, counsels, andoversees PCM team personnel to include physician assistants, nurse practitioners, medicaltechnicians, and administrative personnel.

Provides input and guidance on clinical aspects and/orresolves issues relating to the management of the PCM templates to ensure access-to-care standardsare met.

For an enrolled population, monitors the interpretation of population-based healthassessments in order to identify strategies for effective resource utilization, disease management,case management, and preventive health.


DUTY 4:

Serves as a member of the professional medical staff, and complies with hospital/clinic plans andpolicies to meet AAAHC or TJC requirements.

Participates in continuing education programs to updateand maintain skills and knowledge in accordance with Medical Group (MDG) and unit policies includingdepartment in-services education.

Actively participates and contributes to medical oversight activitiesto include peer review programs. Serves as clinical preceptor for other professional providers whichmay include other Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, etc. Participates inhospital/clinic committee work as determined by the Chief of the Medical Staff commensurate withother physicians of the same specialty performing like duties (i.e. Credentials, Pharmacy &Therapeutics, Population Health, Occupational Health committees, and other such activities). Providesprofessional guidance concerning unit/MDG policies and/or operating instructions.

DUTY 5:

Participate in local disaster training exercises as directed by the Chief of the Medical Staff (SGH) orMedical Group Commander; responds to real-world disaster situations.

Participates in local disastertraining exercises to maintain preparedness levels.

Responds to assigned medical treatment facility inreal-world disaster to facilitate primary care delivery in the face of an emergent local situation.

Coordinates with local, state, and county medical emergency personnel to execute primary caredelivery in accordance with the assigned facility's Medical Contingency Response Plan (MCRP).

Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
US Citizenship required


Must be Board Certified/Eligible Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation.

Board certification in Aerospace Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Occupational Medicineor Preventive Medicine or equivalent is required.


Must possess a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).


Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Five (5) years experience as an Aerospace Medicine Physician is preferred.
