Summary

The supervisory pharmacy technician evaluates, coordinates and provides supervisory oversight for all technical aspects of Pharmacy operations involved with workflow, to include floor stocking, medication delivery, ward inspections, narcotic oversight, inventory procurement and maintenance, compounded products and medication dispensing. They supervise and provide technical oversight to manage personnel and work assignments that assures completion of Pharmacy workload.



Duties

Supervisory Activities

  • Develops the work schedule, grants leave and rotates duties of the Pharmacy Technician staff. Assures that personnel are scheduled in such a way to provide consistency of coverage while promoting employee morale. Tracks and approves Pharmacy Technician timecards on a biweekly basis.
  • Effectively manages technical staff to assure workflow is optimized within the assigned service area. Continuously analyzes and reassesses priorities, redirecting staff, as necessary, to assure that workload demands are accomplished in the most effective, efficient and economic manner possible.
  • Coordinates day-to-day maintenance and operation of Pharmacy area equipment and automation.
  • Oversees specialty areas (such as the narcotic vault and IV compounding suite) as required and assigned.
  • Assists with the development of performance standards that are realistic, challenging and supporting of the organizational mission, vision and goals. Ensures all employees meet performance standards and competencies and identifies areas for improvement as needed.
  • Interviews and selects new employees and candidates for promotion and/or reassignment. Makes recommendations of employees for performance awards and other forms of recognition.
  • Reviews each subordinate's competencies and completes performance evaluations for subordinates. Ensures any deficiencies are properly documented and training/retraining is scheduled in a timely manner.
  • Recommends counseling and disciplinary action based upon conduct under the supervision of the Chief of Pharmacy with guidance from Employee Labor Relations.
  • Conducts meetings with subordinates to assure proper updates of departmental, facility and organizational communications.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of policies and procedures and participates in departmental strategic planning and quality improvement activities.
Quality and Regulatory Duties
  • Prepares management reports as delegated.
  • Assists other Pharmacy supervisors and staff to identify areas of duplication of efforts and develops solutions to streamline.
  • Develops and implements necessary administrative audits, including review of wait time and workflow analysis.
  • Effectively evaluates Pharmacy activities to assist management to obtain short- and long-range objectives and goals.
  • Assists in preparation for national, local and special accreditations of Pharmacy service.
  • Proactively evaluates and analyzes data for self-driven performance improvement projects, workload analysis and statistical reports.
Other Duties
  • Assists in other patient care areas as deemed necessary to maintain the consistency of overall Pharmacy services.
  • Participates and assists in patient care activities during emergency situations.
  • Completes all National, VISN, local and Pharmacy mandatory training in a timely manner.
  • Maintains national certification with Pharmacy Technicians Certification Board (PTCB) or Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).
  • Complies with all VHA, Medical Center and Pharmacy regulations, directives, policies and procedures.
