Department Summary
The Department of Earth Sciences is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in a wide range of fields in Earth and Environmental Science. The department includes approximately 30 faculty (including TTF and NTTF), 60+ graduate students, and 100+ undergraduate majors. Research and graduate education in the Department of Earth Sciences focuses on the following subfields: (a) Geophysics: tectonics, seismology, remote sensing, and fault mechanics, as well as earthquake hazards; (b) Volcanology: geochemistry, physical volcanology, igneous petrology, and volcanic systems modeling; (c) Climate science: glaciology, paleoclimate and glacial modeling, oceanography, and ice physics; (d) Paleontology: vertebrate paleontology, paleoecology, paleobiogeography, and phylogenetics; (e) Surface processes: Geochemical modeling, hydrology, soil and aqueous geochemistry, landslides, sedimentology and stratigraphy, geomorphology, and fluid mechanics; (f) Planetary Geology: space physics, astrobiology, and planetary interiors.

Position Summary
The University of Oregon Department of Earth Sciences (ERTH) invites applications for a Career Non-Tenure Track Instructor to begin September 16, 2024. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate earth sciences courses including Earth Sciences 103 (Exploring Earth History). The successful candidate will also be expected to provide service in support of the Earth Science undergraduate curriculum with duties such as organizing and overseeing laboratory facilities, coordinating summer field courses, leading field trips, engaging in mentoring and outreach activities, as well as related activities assigned by the ERTH department head. The ideal candidate will be familiar with the literature on best practices for high-quality, inclusive undergraduate pedagogy in earth sciences, and will engage in professional development opportunities in this area. A full course load for this position is 5 courses per year on the quarter system. Approximate work allocation: Instruction (0.73 FTE); service, mentoring, and management of laboratory facilities (0.27 FTE).

Minimum Requirements
Minimum Qualifications by rank:

• Instructor: Master's degree in Earth Sciences or related area AND 3 years of college-level teaching experience as a primary instructor.

• Senior Instructor I: PhD in Earth Sciences or related area AND at least 6 years of college-level teaching experience as a primary instructor.

• Senior Instructor II: PhD in Earth Sciences or related area AND at least 12 years of college-level teaching experience as a primary instructor.

Professional Competencies

• Knowledge of inclusive, engaged, and research-led teaching at the college level.

• Ability to develop and teach introductory earth sciences and historical geology, as well as upper-division courses in earth sciences.

• Ability to work with undergraduate students at all levels from diverse backgrounds.

• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and graduate student educators.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or related area.

• Professional development in scientific pedagogy and current best practices in college-level science instruction.

• Experience in curriculum development, course design, and/or program assessment.
