RPDS seeks a School Counselor for the school year to provide counseling services and support for students and families. The School Counselor will work closely with students, faculty, and parents to assist in the social and emotional development and nurturing of each child so that they find success, foster a positive sense of self, and become their best selves. The School Counselor provides individual and small group guidance and proactively educates students around topics associated with self-esteem, self-management, problem solving, conflict resolution, and responsible decision making. The school counselor actively supports the school's mission and works in collaboration with faculty, administration and parents to support student needs and nurture the development of the whole child.

Responsibilities:

  • Work in collaboration with teachers, administration, parents, and outside resources to support student needs.
  • Proactively and effectively communicate with parents, teachers, administrators, students, and outside professionals.
  • Consult with faculty to address students' mental health, social and emotional needs providing appropriate interventions.
  • Assist teachers and administrators in establishing appropriate behavior management protocols.
  • Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively regarding personal, social, academic, family, and behavioral concerns.
  • Educate students about self-awareness, self-esteem, problem-solving, conflict resolution skills, making friends and avoiding bullying behavior, and understanding their learning uniqueness.
  • Conduct student behavioral and academic progress checks
  • Mediate conflicts that arise between students
  • Facilitate classroom SEL lessons in Care and Connect meetings.
  • Provide counseling and support for parents as needed assisting families with referrals to community resources when needed.
  • Provide counseling and support for faculty, staff, and administration as needed.
  • Attend weekly Student Needs Committee meetings to discuss and develop plans for high-risk students.
  • In collaboration with the SNC committee, identify students with special behavioral and academic needs while making appropriate interventions, recommendations, and referrals.
  • Assist in identifying and referring at-risk students for educational evaluation, remediation and/or for alternative placement.
  • Lead informational workshops for faculty, parents, and the community on pertinent topics.
  • Assist in the reporting to the Florida Department of Children and Families any suspected cases of abuse or neglect.
  • Be available for immediate crisis assessment and intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
  • Uphold and support the school's commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Attend off campus overnight trips such as Pathfinders, Southwind, Project LEADS, etc. Qualifications:
    • Demonstrated success in counseling, school counseling, or a related field
    • Hold a minimum of a MA in an appropriate discipline preferred.
    • Maintains a current counseling or therapy license/certification
    • Current knowledge and understanding of trends and best practices
    • Understanding of culturally competent teaching and differentiated instruction
    • Ability to lead, inspire, support, and mentor faculty
    • Ability to function as a collaborative member of a community
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all members of the school community
    • High degree of empathy, integrity, discretion, and trustworthiness
    • Warm personality and positive spirit
    • Professional demeanor and a high commitment to student growth and development
    • Good sense of humor, balanced perspective, and high emotional intelligence
