The Relief Instructor is responsible for providing additional, supplemental or substitute training to new and current bus operators. A Relief Instructor plans, organizes, and teaches new and experienced operators in the proper operation of buses and equipment in accordance with the standards and procedures specified by Metro Transit.This posting will fill multiple current garage openings at all garages and establish an eligibility list for Bus Relief Instructors. Relief Instructors will remain working as a bus operator at their current garage until they are scheduled to work as a relief instructor at their garage and/or at the instruction center. Relief instructors must be flexible to work any shift and assignment and are paid according to the length of their assignment and the ATU contract (see additional information).
Recruitment type: Departmental Competitive - Available to current full-time Metro Transit Bus Operators with two (2) years of full-time Bus Operator experience (see job qualifications) and the ability to pass the Work Record Evaluation and the Relief Instructor Attendance Qualifications

What you would do in this job
- Delivers initial on-going instruction in accordance with the standards and procedures specified by Metro Transit.
- Performs all training assignments following established training program and guidelines; documents observations of operator's performance and recommends remedial actions.
- Instructs and trains new employees (trainees), experienced operators and maintenance employees in the safe and proper use and operation of vehicles and equipment.
- Conducts roadway training to educate operator trainees in the mechanical operation and safe driving/operation habits.
- Demonstrates proper operation regarding time schedules, rules and regulations and street /train routes and passenger transport
- Prepares bus operator trainees to qualify for their commercial driver license (bus operations).
- Participates in mentoring program(s) as required.
- Participates in training new students during level one of the apprenticeship programs out of the Instruction Center.
- Participates in ongoing professional development programs as required.
- Provides work direction to Metro Transit to trainees and operators.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
- High school diploma/GED AND two (2) years of experience as a Bus Operator, with experience working with a PC (at home or work) using word processing and email functions.
OR
- High school diploma/GED AND one (1) year of full-time experience as a bus operator with Metro Transit AND one year of relevant education/experience (such as Adult Training/Education BA degree, instruction time at another company, 3rd party tester at another company, driving time at another company) with experience working with a PC (at home or work) using word processing and email functions.
Licensure Requirement:
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for purposes of travel to other work sites.
- Ability to maintain all applicable license certifications.
- Zero no shows
- No suspensions
- No responsible/chargeable accidents
- No written warnings issued in the last 12 months
- Held off - for any serious offenses such as, license or CDL suspension/revocation/expiration, etc.
- No Cell phone violations
- No drug/alcohol policy violations
- No Last Chance Agreements
- No more than eight (8) days away from work in the past six months
- No more than two (2) occurrences in the past six months including Late (work or no work), Sick, picked overtime (late, sick, no-show or request off prior to 9am the preceding day), Request off after 9am the preceding day, and request off before 9am the preceding day (unpaid time).
- Public speaking, coaching, training, or mentoring experience
- Knowledge and experience developing materials using adult learning principles
- Intermediate skills in creating and presenting in Power Point
- Ability to work a flexible schedule
What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
- Knowledge of Metro Transit policies and procedures; applicable transit/transportation laws, rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) laws and regulations; defensive driving techniques, routes and equipment pertaining to operations; knowledge of the operational characteristics of passenger buses; fare system and routes at assigned garage.
- Knowledge of how to mentor and/or teach groups of people and public speaking experience is preferred.
- Ability to monitor and evaluate performance of trainees
- Ability to complete accurate and timely documentation of records.
- Ability to work independently under limited supervision.
- Ability to understand and interpret new and existing training materials and apply instructional concepts.
- Ability to deal effectively with a diverse group of people at all levels of the organization.
- Written and verbal communications skills. Skilled in making presentations.
- Ability to operator video equipment, learning aids and other teaching equipment.

What your work environment would be:
Position works in both inside and outside environments in varying weather and environmental conditions
Physical Requirements:
Regularly required to sit for long periods, stand/walk occasionally, speak, hear normal conversation and telephone ring tones, operate a computer and other office equipment, reach with hands/arms frequently below chest height and occasionally overhead, must occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 10 pounds (bus instructors) and 50 pounds (bus instructors) must have adequate close vision for reading and computer work.
What steps the recruitment process involves:

- We conduct a structured panel interview which includes a candidate pre-interview exercise.
- We check again for Relief Attendance Requirements before placement on the Eligible List.
Incumbent must perform heavy manual labor, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with the assistance of applicable equipment or other employees. Ability to meet color and peripheral vision requirements. Must be able to work from heights with the assistance of proper safety equipment and ability to work in all outdoor weather conditions Regularly required to stand and walk and reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel, for long periods, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl.
Once you have successfully completed the steps above, then:
If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
