The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering (BEE) is one of the largest of its kind in the country, with a very diverse faculty, staff, and student population. The department serves three integrated functions: teaching undergraduate and graduate students, researching problems in biology and the environment, and public outreach to help society implement new knowledge.

The New York State Water Resources Institute (NYSWRI) resides within CALS and BEE. Its mission is to improve the management of water resources in New York State and the nation. NYSWRI collaborates with regional, state, and national partners to increase awareness of emerging water resource issues and to develop and assess new water resource management approaches, technologies, and policies. NYSWRI connects water research and water management communities.

What You Will Do

As the Restoration Technician, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining a plant materials nursery, conducting plant monitoring at previous restoration sites, data entry, providing one-on-one assistance to landowners, assessing and preparing potential planting sites, and leading volunteers at planting projects. Other duties include:

  • Implementing, monitoring, and adaptively managing streamside restoration and enhancement projects.
  • Assessing and preparing streamside planting project sites.
  • Leading volunteers at planting events.
  • Developing and maintaining a native plant materials center for planting projects.
  • Assessing and mapping planted project areas using an established protocol.
  • Monitoring and managing invasive species.
  • Instructing landowners in the maintenance of restoration areas.
  • Updating and maintaining databases and files.

What We Need

We are looking for a talented individual who excels at building and maintaining effective relationships with multiple stakeholders. We need someone who wants to assist with

spring and fall streamside replanting projects within the Hudson River Estuary. Additionally, we need someone who has the following:

  • Associate's Degree and experience with plant and/or conversation-related fieldwork.
  • Knowledge and ability to identify native trees and shrubs of New York State.
  • Strong interest in native plant restoration.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Ability to physically work in field locations that can be difficult to access.
  • Must be able to navigate uneven terrain, hills, etc.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proven experience in communicating effectively, both written and oral.
  • Works well with others in a collaborative and positive manner.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong observational skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information, both verbally and in written form.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently once provided sufficient direction.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in adverse conditions.
  • Ability to work alone or with a team and problem-solve as needed.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver's license.
  • Must have a reliable cell phone.
  • Must be willing to travel throughout New York State Hudson Valley in a state vehicle.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:

  • Bachelor's degree in ecology, biology, forestry, natural resources management, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with potted plant care and maintenance of planted trees and shrubs.
  • Experience with field monitoring and management of planted areas.
  • Experience driving a pick-up truck with a trailer.
  • Experience using ArcGIS and Microsoft suites (Word, Excel) for data entry and analysis.
  • Experience using GPS to navigate.

This is a temporary ten-month (38 hours/week) appointment.

There is the opportunity to work remotely within New York State two days a week; an on-site presence in New Paltz is required three days a week, depending on business needs.

  • Compensation is based upon experience/qualifications and is within the range of $19.00/hour to $24.00/hour.
