Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) for [the Writing Center])

Position Overview:
The Writing Center is seeking Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) applicants.

Students from all graduate and undergraduate disciplines are encouraged to apply, as soon as possible. The Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) serves as a trained student-peer Writing Center Tutor.

The Writing Center offers Fresno State students appointments for (1) semester-long small writing groups and (2) one-on-one tutoring sessions, which are led by Writing Center tutors (ISAs).

To support the writing needs of students, the Writing Center tutor (ISA) will complete a required two-day orientation at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, and will continue vital training, management skills, collaboration, and best writing center practices, when enrolled in the weekly Practicum in Tutoring Writing course.


The Writing Center reserves the right to choose the most qualified candidate for each position and to assign Instructional Student Assistant to the courses that are appropriate for the writing center program and curriculum in any given semester.

Due to staff and curriculum changes, courses offered may vary, and no guarantee of employment from semester to semester can be made.

Location:
The Writing Center is a vital division in the Department of English. The center is located in the Kremen Education Building, room ED 184.

Hours: 0-20 hours per week. ($17.01 hour)


Job Duties may include the following, but will be dependent upon the needs of the Writing Center, as well as upon the specific needs and guidance of the Writing Center Director and/or Writing Center Co-Assistant Directors.


  • As a studentpeer tutor, facilitate small group(s) and/or oneonone session(s).
  • Maintain clear records and attendance of all Writing Center student/client interactions.
  • Assess writing needs of students/clients, and give feedback on brainstorming, writing drafts, and assignments.
  • Maintain best Writing Center pedagogical practices, by actively seeking guidance from the Writing Center Director and/or Writing Center Co-Assistant Directors.
  • Attend the Writing Center orientations (fall and spring semester), as well as enroll in and attend the weekly practicum course (Thursdays 4:005:50 PM).


Qualifications:


  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Undergraduate student or Graduate student in good academic standing
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic background.
  • Show serious and consistent commitment to the Writing Center.
  • Completion of First-Year Writing course(s) or equivalent coursework.
Preferred

Qualifications:


  • Completion of 60 units of undergraduate academic coursework
  • Desire to learn best practices of Writing Center Pedagogy and Administration.

  • Evaluations: ISA's may be evaluated per [CBA, Unit 11, Article 8])
  • Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary.
  • Assignments: Assignments are made by Department Chair or Program Coordinator after consultation with the candidate.
  • Duties Form: Per the [Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11]), a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department Instructional Student Assistant position.
  • Instructional Student Assistant positions are for matriculated students at Fresno State.
  • Students are limited to 20hours of parttime work on campus.
