Assistant/Associate Professor of Animal Science – Veterinary Medicine

The School of Agricultural Sciences & Forestry at Louisiana Tech University invites applications for a tenure-track, 12-month or 9-month faculty position specializing in Animal Science, with emphasis on veterinary medicine (60% teaching, 20% research, 20% service). The successful candidate will join the ranks of a robust animal science program that thoroughly prepares students for professional careers and graduate study in veterinary medicine and other animal science fields. The School of Agricultural Sciences & Forestry is home to 18 faculty and 9 staff serving approximately 400 students in Agricultural Business, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Forestry, and Geographic Information Science degree programs. The B.S. Animal Science degree program is the largest among them, and its Pre-Veterinary Medicine concentration is highly regarded for providing students with strong academic preparation and professional development; as a result, the program enjoys consistently high acceptance rates to DVM programs. Through our Tech Farm animal units, connections with regional veterinary clinics, and a variety of student organizations, our students have numerous opportunities to complement their studies and develop their skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES : The position requires teaches courses required for students in the Animal Science major and particularly its Pre-Veterinary Medicine concentration. Courses may include: Animal Anatomy & Physiology, Animal Endocrinology, Reproduction Physiology, Animal Pathology, Companion Animal Management, and others as needed and depending upon the selected candidate's expertise and interest. The position also requires the recruiting, advising, and mentoring of students, and guiding Pre-Vet students through the veterinary medicine school application process. The individual hired to fill this position will be expected to establish an externally-supported applied research program, and engage with professional and/or scientific societies as well as professionals at local, state, and regional levels. The hired individual will serve on School, College, and University committees, and will collaborate with faculty colleagues, Tech Farm management staff, and local community members to provide students with exceptional classroom, laboratory, and vocational learning opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS : DVM or PhD in Animal Science or a closely related field is required. PhD candidates that have completed their dissertation defense (ABD) with a documented plan of completion by appointment date will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with clinical, farm, or agricultural producer experience relevant to the position. Experienced and qualified veterinarians holding DVM are eligible for the 12-month appointment with additional duties as Resident Veterinarian for Tech Farm animal units (Beef, Equine, Sheep & Swine). Commitment to the professional education of undergraduate students is a must. Evidence of the ability to plan and conduct research must be provided. Must exhibit strong written and oral communication skills, with effective interpersonal skills to engage productively with students, faculty, staff, and the public. Candidates must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time of appointment.
