This position provides nutrition focused health services to high-risk populations of infants, children, and adults who are pregnant, postpartum, or breast/chestfeeding in the WIC clinic. It also provides guidance and serves as a resource for WIC program staff and other public health staff. This position is responsible for development and implementation of nutrition care plans in WIC and delegation of plan components to Nutrition Specialist staff and management of prescribed therapeutic nutritional products in collaboration with health care providers with prescriptive authority. This position requires considerable knowledge of nutrition and dietetics. A variety of strategies, including education and counseling are used to improve health and nutritional status and effect behavior change.
Location and Schedule
This position is in-person at our Western and Northern Service Centers in Apple Valley and West St. Paul, MN. Work is performed Monday through Friday during regular business hours (8:00am-4:30pm), with occasional evening hours until 6:30pm. This position has a variable and flexible schedule, with the possibility of working 1-2 days per week.
What You'll Do
As an Intermittent Registered Dietitian, you will:
- Complete certification appointments for WIC participants, in which you will assess eligibility, determine health and nutrition risk factors, and create nutrition intervention plans based on identified needs
- Create individualized nutrition care plans for high-risk WIC participants
- Document assessment, intervention plans, and outcomes in WIC Information System
- Conduct follow-up nutrition assessments with corresponding nutrition education, following the counseling style of Participant Centered Services
- Perform public health emergency response functions as trained and assigned within the department's emergency response plan
- Promote a diverse, inclusive, culturally competent, and respectful workplace.

Minimum Qualifications
NEED TO HAVE QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition or Dietetics with a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) or a Coordinated program in Dietetics (CP) accredited by the Council for Education for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) with Completion of a supervised practice ACEND accredited Dietetic internship resulting in registration eligibility by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
- Master's Degree in Food and Nutrition or Dietetics with a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) or a Coordinated program in Dietetics (CP) accredited by the Council for Education for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) resulting in registration eligibility by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
- Current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) as a Registered Dietitian
- Current licensure by the Minnesota Board of Dietetics and Nutrition Practice as a Licensed Dietitian or Licensed Nutritionist OR ability to obtain prior to the first date of employment
- Certificate in CPR including infants or completion within 6 months of hire
- Experience working for the WIC program
- Experience in working with diverse populations and clients with limited English proficiency
- Completed lactation education/training and/or experience working with lactating individuals
- Bilingual skills are desirable
Duties & Responsibilities
These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.
- Determine client/family needs by completion of a comprehensive assessment of the client/family situation, focusing on nutrition and related health needs using nutrition assessment skills and professional judgment.
- Develop and implement a nutrition intervention plan and strategies to meet identified needs, including case management of high-risk WIC participants to ensure a coordinated approach with health care providers for identified nutrition risks, address service gaps, and monitor quality to produce effective client outcomes and facilitate behavior change.
- Provide health and nutrition consultation and education on individual and community levels through direct client service, collaboration with other professional health care and public health providers, and by participating in community groups and coalitions to improve the health status of populations.
- Document assessment, intervention plans, and outcomes according to federal, state, and local program regulations, statutes, policies, guidelines, and practice standards; provide input for program quality improvement.
- Direct WIC program Nutrition Specialists in implementation of nutritional plans.
- Provide delegated components of orientation in WIC clinic for new program staff and clinical experiences for nutrition, nursing, and public health students under the supervision and delegation of the program supervisors and program coordinator.
- Apply evidence-based information and research to advance individual and program level nutrition practices in WIC.
- Performs public health emergency response functions as trained and assigned within the department's emergency response plan.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment
- Considerable knowledge of human dietetics and nutrition principles in health and disease across the lifespan, especially in maternal/infant/child health and breast/chestfeeding and their application to public health, public health nutrition, and other healthcare settings.
- Knowledge of effective client-centered education and counseling methods and concepts used to facilitate behavior change and skill building with high-risk population in public health settings.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, statutes, policies, guidelines related to Dakota County, public health and public health nutrition and the ability to integrate them into practice.
- Knowledge of cultural patterns and practices of diverse populations, especially those that relate to health and nutrition of pregnant and postpartum adults, infants, and children.
- Knowledge of universal precautions and bloodborne pathogens, and ability to implement them in public health practice settings.
- Knowledge of communities and their resources, and the ability to identify gaps in available resources and barriers to client access and referral.
- Ability to establish collaborative relationships with other health professionals and staff to deliver safe, effective nutrition services.
- Ability to refer clients and their families to other professional services when needs are beyond the scope of nutrition practice or can be better addressed in a collaborative environment.
- Considerable ability to use technology and software, data, and information systems to support client services and perform assigned duties within specified work standards.
- Ability to communicate effectively for client and program services in a variety of formats, including oral, written, visual, and electronic methods.
- Ability to work effectively in teams and provide leadership, advocacy, education, and consultation about nutrition related health needs of high-risk clients and groups.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and solve problems effectively.
- Ability to competently perform CPR.
