Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 12 months that may be extended for 12 additional months without further competition.

Salary: $49,146 (Step 01) to $63,892 (Step 10). NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.



Duties

As a Biological Science Technician (Plants) within the Western Ecological Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Assist in conducting field studies and surveys to collect botanical data and/or specimens to support scientific studies.
  • Run computer programs to enter, verify, manage and manipulate data and data files in automated databases or geographic information systems.
  • Process and evaluate the quality and validity of field and laboratory data.
  • Assist with compilation and summary of field and laboratory data for preparation of interim reports.
  • Edit scientific manuscripts, project and official/administrative reports.
  • Operate a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
  • Operate and maintain outboard powered boats.
Physical Demands

The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring running, walking, or bending, walking or climbing ladders or scaffolds to observe, collect or record data.

Work Environment

The work environment varies from laboratory setting to field sites and offices. The work involves moderate risks and discomforts such as high noise levels and exposure to chemicals, adverse weather conditions, and extreme temperatures that may require following special safety procedures. Work is performed in difficult terrain under extreme weather conditions, sometimes for long hours.

Conditions of Employment of the USGS Watercraft Safety Program:

Motorboat Operator Certification - You must be able to take and pass the USGS Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) within six (6) months of employment.

CPR Certification - Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification for the duration of employment.

First Aid Certification - Must be able to obtain and maintain Wilderness or Advanced First Aid certification for duration of employment. (Note: Only if the employee will be over an hour away from emergency services while on a boat.)
