Kayak Instructor

The MarineQuest Kayak Instructor will have the opportunity to lead kayak trips in a variety of coastal habitats including estuaries, tidal creeks, and riverine habitats. With MarineQuest you will learn about marine science topics including geological features, water quality, threatened species conservation, and habitat loss.

Ideal Candidate

• Experience teaching and leading kayak trips with youth in sit-on-top kayaks.
• Ability to drive and experience driving a vehicle with a trailer.
• Previous experience and desire to work with youth.
• Must be able to lead and participate in outdoor learning experiences (rain or shine, temperatures over 80 degrees).
• Strong oral communication skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, co-workers, other university staff, and the general public.
• Must demonstrate initiative and leadership qualities.
• Preference is given to candidates who are in (or have completed) a degree program related to marine sciences or environmental education.
• Knowledge of local North Carolina marine habitats is a plus.
• CPR/First Aid is required.
• Lifeguard Certification is required.
• ACA level 2 kayak instructor certification preferred.

Room and Board

• Lodging is provided in a UNCW residential facility. Staff rooms are single and share a bathroom with another staff member on the floor with students. The building has free laundry and a full kitchen. To learn more about the residential accommodation please visit the UNCW Housing page.
