Summary

This position is located at Steamtown NHS in the Maintenance Division. The purpose of this position is to provide non-journeyman level work in a variety of trades. This is a testing designated position.



Duties
  • Works as a track crew worker and track maintenance inspector/worker: inspection of the park's track and rail system, and special inspections to meet Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards of class 1, 2 and 3 track; weekly and monthly inspections of the park's switches and frogs systems; completes/maintains track inspection records and updates all repairs and remedial action on all repo1ts; maintains and assures the proper gauge and alignment of all track age to FRA standards, repairs and maintains all turnouts, crossings, crossing signs and signals.
  • Responsible, under the Railroad Workplace Safety Part 214 (Roadway Worker Protection), for the following: sets up Railroad Worker Protection for track worker; provides on-track safety for lone worker; installs derails, lockout/tag out locks, and blue flags in work areas. Provides communications with the park's yardmaster and D&L yardmaster for track repairs work, foul time, blue flagging and the placement of car derail; inform park's dispatcher and D&L dispatcher of out-of-service track age, restricted speed and walk-over areas, in the park's rail yard system.
  • As an FRA qualified roadway worker, may be required to perform duties in close proximity to railroad tracks with the potential of fouling a track. Duties may include serving as a railroad track flagman or watchman/lookout. Roadway workers are considered Maintenance-of-Way employees as defined in 49 CFR Part 214.
  • Performs railroad track work using a variety of power tools and hand tools. Some of the tools are, but not limited to, hydraulic units with attachments (i.e., such as jack han1mers, spikes, spike pullers, drills, saws, rail puller, generators, power drills, chain saws, sledgehammers, railroad jacks, etc.)
  • Performs operator maintenance on all equipment used such as checking fuel levels, oil checks and changes, recommended grease jobs and safety inspections. Make minor repairs to vehicles and equipment (i.e., replacing air filters and inner lights, hose com1ections, replacing gaskets, plugs, fan belts, hydraulic systems, oil and lube services and keeping vehicle clean).
CAREER SEASONAL: Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately February thru December, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.
