Job Summary:

Under close supervision, the Surgical Technologist II assists during surgery as a member of the surgical team.

Their responsibilities include preparing and organizing the operating room prior to surgery, selecting and passing instruments during surgical procedures, maintaining the operating room in an aseptic condition, and assisting with patient care during and after surgery.

The Surgical Technologist II adheres to prescribed policies and procedures regarding aseptic techniques and maintains a cooperative and courteous relationship with patients, the public, and other personnel.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Assists the physician during surgery as a member of the surgical team.
  • Passes instruments and supplies as directed.
  • Scrubs and adheres to sterile technique for each procedure.
  • Assists in draping the patient.
  • Provides proper retraction of tissue.
  • Assists in controlling hemostasis by applying a Bovie to a clamp as directed by the surgeon.
  • Assists with sponging, suctioning, and performing sponge, needle/sharp, and instrument counts.
  • Prepares suture for closure of surgical incision.
  • Applies proper surgical dressing as directed by the physician (wound healing and dressings).
  • Recognizes, responds to, and assists in acute emergency situations following established procedures and policies.
  • Holds and positions the video camera under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Checks surgeon's preference cards and prepares a sterile setup for the surgeon.
  • Counts with the circulating nurse before she/he preps the patient.
  • Is accountable for items required for documentation on that procedure.
  • Anticipates the wants of the surgeon and keeps adequate sutures and supplies ready.
  • Ensures the Mayo Stand and Back table are neat and orderly, making sure there are no loose needles on the field.
  • Confirms all specimens with the surgeon.
  • Hands off specimens to the circulator prior to the end of the case or earlier if directed by the surgeon.
Additional Surgical Technologist II duties include:
  • Restocking surgical supplies
  • Assisting in creating inventory lists
