Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a professional position responsible for the radiochemical analysis of samples to determine compliance with state radioactive materials licenses in accordance with the rules and regulations promulgated by this agency.
Analyze samples to determine compliance with state radioactive materials licenses for gross alpha, gross beta, tritium, carbon- 14, nickel-63, strontium-89/90, iodine-125 and other radionuclides as required. Log in and prepare all samples for analysis, including the sample preparation and use of a sample oxidizer if required. Analyze all samples that are to be analyzed for weak beta particles on a liquid scintillation spectrometer. Analyze all samples that are to be analyzed for alpha and energetic beta particles on an alpha/beta, low background, proportional counter. Analyze all samples that require gamma analysis on a spectrometer. Prepare laboratory reagents used in the analyses. Prepare and maintain laboratory glassware and equipment. Distribute wipes with glassine envelopes as requested.
Calculate and report results to the requesting health physicist. Write calculator and computer programs and perform statistical analyses when needed. Prepare monthly and semiannual work reports.
Prepare radioactive standards and calibrate instruments annually or on an as needed basis. Prepare and maintain records, control charts, and graphs of instrument performance and analytical quality control data. Perform experiments to improve analytical procedures and instrument performance. Participate as a member of the state radiological emergency response team.
Perform other related duties as required.
Available on a 24 hour-a-day basis for response to radiation emergencies as a member of the State Radiation Emergency Response Team. Must be able to lift 60 pounds of equipment. Must maintain a valid state of Florida driver's license.
Must receive a minimum score of 70% on each written exam of the required core training modules and must attend all required core training courses designated in the training and qualification procedures.
Complies with and monitors compliance (when applicable) of the mandatory requirements in Section and ,
Florida Statutes and Chapter 69I-24.001, Florida Administrative Code.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in laboratory testing and analysis. Ability to: plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; utilize problem solving techniques; collect, record and analyze scientific data relating to radiochemistry; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
A minimum of three years of experience in the area of physics and analytical techniques of radiation.
