SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:

Under ongoing supervision, measures, aligns cuts, fits elbows and welds, cleans and grinds fabricated products. May assist in coordinating activities of welders and fabricators for special welding techniques and/or procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together according plans and specifications.

· Performs cleaning and grinding as required.

· Grinds welds and end finish.

· Cuts products with torch and other tools.

· Tacks product according to plans and specifications.

· Completes proper documentation.

· Moves pipe with overhead crane.

· Reading tape measuring.

· Blueprint reading.

· Performs other duties as assigned by the lead or supervisor.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Assists in the departmental housekeeping and safety efforts and works collaboratively with other members of the department and production counterparts to ensure production workflow

WORK HOURS / SHIFT:

· Work hours vary or change from eight to twelve hours shifts based on operational needs.

· Must be able to work on Saturdays and overtime as required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

· Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

· Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

· Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

· Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

· Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

· Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· SMAW weld qualified

· FCAW weld qualified

· SAW weld qualified

· Welding machines (wire & stick)

· Grinders

· Arc gouging equipment

· Torches

· Overhead crane

· Lock-out Tag-out

· Small forklift

· Shear

· Misc. hand tools

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

· One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· On the job training by other fitters who have experience, knowledge and insight into the job. Qualified by performance.

FITTER-LAYOUT I – this level of Fitter-Layout is responsible for performing quality welds, and requires little or minimum experience – the candidate must be FCAW-certified and be able to pass a weld test. Individuals in this position operate, work with and around various hand tools and welding equipment. Duties are routinely carried out under close supervision; however, supervision is not always available for routine and repetitive tasks, which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. As work experience is gained and additional welding certification are obtained, the employee may be assigned to tasks that are more difficult in nature and require more responsibility.
