�The Maryland Department of Agriculture is a department under Maryland's Executive Branch.� Formed in 1972 by the Maryland General Assembly to address the agriculture needs for the State of Maryland. The Department oversees and serves as a regulatory body for animal health�and consumer services to include marketing and lab services,�plant and pest management, and resource conservation.� As the number one industry in Maryland, the diversity of agriculture programs in the State continues to expand and grow.��\r
The primary goal of the�PLANT PROTECTION�and�WEED MANAGEMENT SECTION�is to conduct regulatory, inspection, and educational programs that protect the health of plants and honey bees in Maryland. This section serve as the State's authorities on plant pests and agricultural quarantines, and provide liaison for the Department with other state and federal regulatory officials regarding these issues.\r

Main Purpose of Job

The candidate will successfully maintain and monitor the knotweed psyllid colony for the Maryland Dept of Agriculture's biological control program of knotweed.�\r

POSITION DUTIES

Duties will include:\r

\r
With supervision be able to rear, maintain and harvest colonies of knotweed psyllid.�\r
Be able to work lab equipment with training and manipulate insects.�\r
Keep the work area organized, clean and productive.��\r
Keep records of the psyllid on Excel. Be able to share and present data as needed.�\r
Maintain safe work procedures and accurate records.��\r
Assist in Field releases of the insect.\r

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

\r
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and possess a license to drive in the State of Maryland (with no more than 5 points on driving record).\r

Education:�High School Diploma or GED\r
\r
\r
\r
\r

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants�who possess the following preferred qualification(s).�Include clear and specific information on your application regarding�your qualifications.\r

Familiarity with rearing animals or insects or plants.�\r
Must be comfortable with insects, plants, and some self-directed work.�\r
Must be comfortable with light physical labor such as watering, mopping, vacuuming, and cleaning equipment within the lab.�\r
Some fieldwork experience is a plus.\r
\r
\r

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.\r
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.\r
