Summary

ALL US CITIZENS DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has granted the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Direct Hiring Authority for Maintenance Mechanic positions based on a critical hiring need identified within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This authority does not require the application of Veterans' preference or rating and ranking. Applicants will be assessed in the order in which they are received and qualified selections made in that order.



Duties
  • The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the total maintenance condition of the area/zone assigned.
  • Performs visual examination of areas of the medical center by conducting daily inspections to determine the need for maintenance and repair work on systems, structures, and equipment within the area/zone assigned.
  • Initiates electronic work orders to document identified and corrected efficiencies.
  • Types of work include: installation, troubleshooting and maintenance repair of electrical systems, lighting systems, motors, and other electrical equipment; installation, troubleshooting and maintenance repair of plumbing systems and equipment, including valves, strainers, traps, piping, etc.; installation, repair, and maintenance of finishes on a wide variety of materials, including ceilings, floors, walls, etc.; preventative maintenance (PM's) on air conditioning systems, including thermostat adjustment and repair, checking air flow and environmental conditions (temperature and humidity), etc.; installation of new items in any of the areas of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting/plastering; troubleshoots and repairs a variety of leaks such as ceiling and roof leaks.
  • The incumbent performs regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on a variety of kitchen, medical and non-medical materials handling and other equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains non-motorized food carts, laundry cards, metal and wooden office/unit furniture, stretchers (manual and hydraulic), manual beds, patient lifts (manual and hydraulic) throughout the medical center.
  • The Maintenance Mechanic performs maintenance, repair, or construction on a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone and other related materials as assigned.
  • Removes damaged portions of walls or other similar structures in preparation for repair of damage.
  • Incumbent tears out portions of walls for the installation of doors, windows, or in preparation of renovations.
  • Highly technical work or repair which is determined by the incumbent to be beyond his or her skill level is promptly referred to the Maintenance and Utilities Supervisor and/or Maintenance Mechanic Leader, giving a precise evaluation of the problem to facilitate repair by the maintenance contractor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday
