Cytogenetic Technician Entry Level - we will train

Job Summary:

Performs routine Cytogenetics procedures, e.g. slide making, harvesting, culture maintenance (including set-up, flooding, feeding), reagent preparation, equipment maintenance, karyotyping, and banding. Performs routine FISH procedures, e.g. slide preparation, set-up, and slide washing. Responsible for maintaining patient confidentiality while working with Laboratory Information System, requisitions, worksheets, data, and reports.

Trainees will assume technical responsibilities as they are trained and cleared for competency in those areas.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
  • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
  • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
  • Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
  • Assist with processing of specimens when needed
  • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Reagent Preparation - maintenance of stock and working solutions.
  • Uses sterile technique to prepare sterile media.
  • Routine procedures with all specimen types: culture, harvest, slide-making, banding, karyotyping.
  • Automated Karyotyping Procedures.
  • Microscope analysis training: attend lectures, complete quizzes and tests.
  • After training is complete, complete ASCP certification exam for Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Cytogenetics

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Record keeping: equipment, maintenance, reagents, QC logs and forms.
  • Monitoring Inventory.

EHS Responsibilities:

  • Attend all required EHS training
  • Wear appropriate PPE as required
  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, EGL/LC EHS policies / procedures and the requirements of accrediting organizations
  • Conduct work in a safe and environmentally responsible manner

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or meet local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements
  • Previous clinical laboratory testing experience is not required
  • ASCP or AMT certification is preferred
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus
  • High level of attention detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs
