Position Summary:

The Department of Art & Design at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University invites applications for the Tepper Chair in Visual Arts from designers and artists with recognized practices that engage innovative and/or community-driven approaches to design. The Tepper Chair is appointed for a two-year term, renewable for a third year upon mutual agreement. The position will begin in September 2024. Funded through the support of Marlene A. Brandt and David A. Tepper, this position was previously held by Park McArthur , Kara Walker , and Catherine Murphy

Responsibilities include:
  • Teach one interdisciplinary Art & Design graduate course each year. This course may take any form. Previous Tepper Chair graduate courses included: thematic research projects, field trips, studio visits, critiques, student exhibitions, and publications.
  • Teach one interdisciplinary Art & Design undergraduate course each year. This course may take any form.
  • Participate in grad and undergrad reviews across art and design disciplines, scheduled intermittently 4 to 6 days per semester, to gain familiarity with department programs and populations.
  • Conceive and facilitate one public event each year, with the support of department staff.

Eligibility:
  • Candidate may not hold a concurrent full-time faculty appointment at another institution. Full-time faculty on leave from their home institution for the duration of the Chair appointment are eligible.
  • Candidate must be available to teach one course each semester for the duration of the appointment while maintaining an active creative practice. On-campus commitments can be scheduled to accommodate the Chair's travel and production schedule.

Salary and resources:
  • The salary is $100,000.
  • A workspace on campus in New Brunswick is available, if desired.
  • Access to Art & Design facilities and equipment, including those used for design, printmaking, media, photography, and sculpture is available.
  • An annual project budget of $10,000 is available for public programs, exhibitions, publications, and other projects that connect students to the chair's research and pedagogy.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Candidate should be an actively practicing designer or artist with a national profile, college-level teaching experience, and an ambitious studio and research program.
  • Candidate should bring innovative approaches to pedagogy and student engagement.
  • Candidate's research and pedagogy should engage students who work across multiple media.
  • Candidate should bring new models and perspectives to our diverse community of faculty, staff, and students, embracing diverse cultural backgrounds and abilities, and including immigrant, LGBTQ, neuro-diverse, and first-generation-college populations
