Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Heland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Training and Development, Field Operations Canine Academy in Front Royal, VA



Duties

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Training and Development will allow you to use your expertise to support the health and welfare of service canines. This position starts at a salary of $68, GS-09, Step 1) to $88, GS-09, Step 10) with promotion potential to $88, GS-9 Step 10).

In this Animal Health Technician position, you will become a key member of a team of homeland security professionals responsible for performing a variety of medical treatments and procedures related to the care of canines. Typical work assignments include:

  • Performing general physical examinations of animals to detect obvious abnormalities, recording, and reporting the results to the attending veterinarian. Ensuring that all newly acquired canines receive required medical attention prior to integration into the Field Operations Canine Academy (FOCA);
  • Maintaining clean examination rooms, surgical suites, and treatment areas. Scrubbing in as a surgical assistant, preparing animals for surgery, performing such tasks as shaving surgical areas and placing IV catheters. Intubate trachea and administer anesthesia in the proper dosage as directed by the veterinarian along with Initiating invasive/non-invasive anesthetic monitoring procedures;
  • Recording results, tracking and analyzing health trends in all FOCA canines to develop and recommend new procedures to enhance the health and safety of the canine population;
  • Performing various techniques used in the veterinary laboratory associated with hematology, clinical chemistry, serology, and necropsy; and
  • Developing an effective service dog-breeding program, in conjunction with the attending veterinarian along with establishing the routines, methods, and practices and procedures for operating the breeding program, and for assuring the safety and health care of the breeding stock and puppies.
