Relevant projects and communication activities are undertaken according to the timelines and quality agreed by the Mental Health Leadership Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Background:
In 2018, the United Nations System Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy was launched.

The purpose of the strategy was to increase the effectiveness of the UN by optimising the psychological health of its personnel.

A Mental Health Leadership Team (MHLT) was established to implement the strategy within the Secretariat in 2020. This is a multi-disciplinary team with members representing all UN Secretariat Entities. A 2024 and beyond strategy has been approved and launched in late 2023. The strategy outlines key indicators, and a scorecard has been developed for reporting on indicators. Mental Health and Well-being related functions are currently spread across a number of UN Secretariat entities.

These include:

  • The Department of Management, Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC): Which is responsible is pertaining to areas such as: policy, leadership, learning, performance management, and conduct and discipline.
  • The Department of

Operational Support:

Which is responsible for implementing strategies, such as return to work and sick leave and providing Counselling services to NY based staff.


  • The Department of
Safety and Security: Which includes the Critical Incidence Stress Management Service which provides Counselling services to field-based entities and responds in crisis situations. A number of guidance documents and GA resolutions outline the roles of the different departments. A Communication and Engagement Expert is required to work with the MHLT, the Secretariat's Mental Health Lead and other stakeholders to review progress on projects in the 2023 Action Plan, oversee the development and implementation of the 2024 Action Plan and lead projects related to the plan. The role will be focused on assessing the approach taken, recommending change where needed and continuing to ensure that the UN System Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy is implemented within the UN Secretariat.

The duties and responsibilities of the Communication and Engagement Expert are:

  • Support the Mental Health and Well-being Strategic Lead in championing the Workplace Mental Health & Well-being Strategy's communication activities across the Secretariat
  • Increase awareness of the strategy through ongoing promotional activities in the workplace in a variety of formats- broadcasts, video, audio
  • Coordinate with graphic design, video, media, and other relevant departments to ensure consistency, alignment, of messages and design across different communication mediums within the Secretariat
  • Coordinate events related to the strategy with clear objectives, ensuring they are achievable and relevant
  • Plan and lead activities for World Mental Health Day and other key events pertinent to staff wellbeing within the Secretariat
  • Prepare relevant articles to promote actions taken to implement the strategy
  • Provide constructive feedback for communications prepared by other team members
  • Recommend and establish avenues for internal communication and knowledge sharing
  • Formulate and propose methodology for strengthening employee engagement in workplace mental health matters
  • Support the Mental Health and Well-being Strategic Lead with coordinating Action Learning Sets and Communities of Practice to educate and coach the process of engagement and ownership of the strategy
  • Develop a comprehensive template to guide implementation and use of the Mental Health and Well-being Strategy scorecard across the Secretariat
  • Provide input into reports and develop talking points for Senior officials as needed.
  • Perform other related assignments, as required by the project.
Qualifications/special skills

Master's degree in Public Health, Communication, Business Administration, Human Resources, Mental Health or related area is required.

A first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.

Experience in communications, mental health, public health or workplace health is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English, both written and oral is required.
