Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Nāpuʻu Natural Resource Management (NNRM) at Puʻu Waʻawaʻa and Puʻu Anahulu, located on the island of Hawaiʻi. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


MONTHLY SALARY: $3,400/Mon.


DUTIES: Assists with planning, organizing, and leading outreach and environmental education programs and events at Puʻu Waʻawaʻa and Puʻu Anahulu. Assists with designing displays, presentations, flyers, handouts, brochures, and related materials for use in community outreach efforts. This program includes field- based Student Education Programs, Community Outreach Events, classroom and field-based Teacher Education Programs, and Media Outreach. All education and outreach activities place an emphasis on Hawaiian culture & language, geology, history, natural resource management and the preservation of Hawai'i's native diversity. Education & Outreach programs often take place in the field, and the employee will lead volunteers and students in natural resource management activities, including but not limited to: reforestation, weed control, native plant surveys, native bird surveys, and trail building among other tasks. Field-based activities involve hiking over moderately rugged terrain, carrying heavy packs and equipment, and potentially working in inclement weather. Oversees volunteers. Ensures that all reporting, data entry, and record keeping for events are maintained. This is a progression series job in which the employee will be expected to perform with increasing independence on progressively responsible duties. Quantity and quality of work is expected to increase as levels increase. Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on time-in-grade, rather upon employee's demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs. Through experience, demonstrated competence, and operational needs, may be hired at the appropriate level.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

At least one (1) year of work experience in a position requiring interaction with the general public. Up to one (0-1) year of additional experience working in an education or outreach position.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic knowledge of the environmental and cultural history of Hawaiʻi. Knowledge of and experience using word processing software, including MS Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) or equivalent.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must be able to communicate effectively. Ability to lead volunteers and to assist in field projects and data collection. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted and over fifty (50) pounds assisted. Must be able to hike long distances (over one (1) mile) over rugged terrain in sometimes rainy, cold, and muddy conditions.

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai'i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of Hawaiian language and culture. Skilled in native Hawaiian plant and animal identification. Knowledge of and experience using email newsletter programs, such as MailChimp or equivalent, to assist with outreach. Knowledge of and experience using desktop publishing software, such as Adobe graphic design programs (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) or equivalent.
