Expedia's Data and AI group is looking for a Machine Learning Scientist to join our Search Machine Learning team. In this role, you will develop machine learning models and data-driven solutions that bring intelligence to our natural language search capabilities. You will contribute to highly visible features on our websites with direct impact to our travelers. What you'll do:

Work with product management to understand business problems, identify challenges and machine learning opportunities, and scope solutions
Formulate machine learning problems, build data ETL pipeline, conduct exploratory data analyses, and develop effective models and scalable solutions
Partner with engineering teams to deliver your solutions into production and to provide ML expertise support
Document the technical details of your work
Present your ideas and results to stakeholders and leadership teams in a clear and effective manner
Collaborate and brainstorm with other team members and across the company
Stay informed about latest AI literature and NLP research to bring inspirations into our work
Who you are:

PhD or master's degree in a technical field; or equivalent related professional experience
3+ years of experience in building machine learning models in the industry or academics
Solid understanding of modern machine learning theories and techniques, mathematics, statistics, and hypothesis testing
Familiarity with advanced statistical NLP such as large language model LLM, representation learning, probabilistic topic model, syntactic and semantic parsing, information retrieval IR, information extraction, retrieval augmented generation RAG, summarization, multi-linguality, fine-tuning or domain adaptation of NLP models using pre-trained LLM (such as Hugging Face), and in-context learning using commercial service (such as OpenAI's GPT)
Hands-on experience with data wrangling, feature engineering, model building, evaluation, and visualization
Proficiency in deep neural net DNN modeling (such as computational graph, activation function, stochastic gradient descent) and popular families of model architectures (such as CNN, Bi-LSTM, and Transformer)
Fluency in Python programming and related machine learning tools (such as NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, NLTK, and spaCy), deep learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), and SQL-like query languages (such as Spark)
Experience working with large data sets in a distributed computing environment
Effective written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences
The total cash range for this position in Chicago is $125,500.00 to $176, Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $201,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.
Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
