Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Maunakea Observatories Support Services (MKSS) located at Halepohaku on the Island of Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $5, $7,500/Mon.


DUTIES: Manages and directs the food and lodging operation at Halepohaku mid-level facility located 35 miles from Hilo at the 9,300 feet elevation of Maunakea. The facility features 72 rooms for observatory guests, 16 cabin rooms, multiple offices, common rooms, dining hall, and commercial kitchen. Oversees operations of the Food & Lodging reservation system, room assignments, check- in/out, meal preparation and serving, janitorial services, linen services, employee supervision and other guest services. Oversees and coordinates janitorial service contracts to Observatories and other offices and facilities off the mountain. Coordinates, plans and oversees catering events for observatory organization at their facilities off the mountain. Reviews guest services practices and procedures for improvements and provides staff training to achieve high quality performance. Must be able to work odd hours and weekends in order to supervise a 24-hour/day operation.


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Associate's Degree from an accredited community college in Culinary Arts, Hotel Management, Business Administration, or related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years of related experience may substitute for an Associate's Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

Six to eight (6-8) years of experience working in a restaurant, club, hotel, or similar venue, including at least three (3) years of experience as a Manager.

KNOWLEDGE

Working knowledge of food preparation and nutritional value of food products. Knowledge of safe food handling procedures. Knowledge of State Department of Health requirements for kitchen operations, and safety procedures related to hazardous chemicals. Knowledge of applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations regarding overnight accommodations. Knowledge of hospitality industry standards and procedures.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Proven ability to supervise, train and evaluate subordinate staff members. Ability to write clear instructions, policies, descriptions, and memos. Ability to use computer for data entry, email, internet searches, and office technology. Proven ability to work closely with guests/patrons in order to improve services provided. Ability to keep inventory records and controls. Ability to balance occupancy rate with staff and food expenses in order to stay within budget. Ability to learn and use the Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i (RCUH) fiscal procedures. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Must be able to follow MKSS Driving Safety Policy. Ability to drive on unpaved, steep roads. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Able to work continuously at 9,300 feet elevation with occasional work at 14,000 feet elevation. MKSS is a drug-free workplace subject to random and post-accident substance abuse testing. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain tuberculosis (TB) clearance. Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination on an ongoing basis.

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai'i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Culinary Arts, Hotel Management, Business Administration or related field. Experience incorporating office technology into the hospitality workplace. Experience in hotel management and working at high altitude. Experience using RCUH fiscal procedures.
