At Daikin Applied, as the Product Engineer I you will be responsible for engineering aspects of products released to production after initial design development, including the design of special order and customized products, maintenance, and minor additions to existing products.

A Day in the Life:

  • Provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
  • Give advice, analyze information, and provide technical guidance within a specific function for others within the organization, including Marketing, Applications, Manufacturing, and Purchasing.
  • Design modifications to standard products for specific customer needs, to an acceptable quality, performance, safety, and cost standard.
  • Support product/development testing and design activities in support of engineering objectives.
  • Assist in designing components and test fixtures as required in testing and qualification of new concepts or supplier components.
  • Assist in using manufacturing techniques such as lean manufacturing 5S, Kaizen, and Value Stream Mapping to improve productivity.
  • Assist in various Cost Improvement Goals, proposing new ideas and initiating cost reduction and product improvement efforts to increase the overall value of the product.
  • Provide timely resolution of field service problems using sound engineering judgment.
  • Take on project management responsibilities and work on business process improvement projects.
  • Keep current on product and component technology improvements and industry trends to effectively perform the functions of the position.
  • Investigate engineering/manufacturing issues related to the assembly of products and take corrective action to prevent recurrence of problems.
  • Develop tools to measure, monitor, and improve product bill of material accuracy and product throughput in the plant.
  • Maintain agency and regulatory approval status (UL, CRN, ASME, KHK, CE, etc.)
  • Maintain product documentation to ensure engineering documentation, drafting documentation, and product is consistent.

What you will Bring:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, preferably with 2+ years of relevant experience in the HVAC industry.
  • PC skills including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal & communications skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously, self-direct daily activities, lead by example, and take initiative.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Project management experience is a plus.

Key Deliverables

  • Fluent with three-phase and single-phase power and control circuit design with experience reading and modifying system schematics in electro-mechanical machinery.
  • Proficient with interpreting and developing controller logic and ladder-style schematics.
  • Working understanding of refrigerant system design for air conditioning systems as well as manufacturing processes associated with the construction of those systems.
  • Ability to navigate bill of material systems to find and identify errors in the initial product design before they are experienced on the production floor.
  • Provide quick reactions to issues that reach the factory floor by partnering with the production team to assess the problem and identify the solution path. Clear communication is essential with both factory personnel and peers responsible for engineering documentation.
  • Experience designing sheet metal parts that are cost-effective and easy to manufacture.
  • Identify new ideas for cost improvement and review cost improvement projects for feasibility, including estimating schedule and financial analysis.
  • Drive partnerships between Sales, Applications, Designers, Manufacturing, Lab personnel, and Field Service personnel to deliver engineering solutions. Lead and manage smaller projects involving these partnerships.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies & maintain technical competency in relevant subject matter areas via industry relationships, professional associations (ASHRAE, AHRI), and technical publications to maintain awareness of basic research activities, materials or processes, working fluids, regulatory implications, & supplier or competitive actions.
  • Collaborate or coordinate efforts necessary to maintain compliance with agencies such as ETL, UL, DOE, and AHRI.
