The School of Nursing seeks to support retention and student success initiatives at the University by engaging and empowering pre-nursing students to make effective decisions about their academic, personal, and professional Pathway to success.

The Academic Nursing Advisor will provide academic advisement and support for pre-nursing students in the development of educational plans with appropriate course selections as outlined in the School of Nursing's Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree curriculum requirements and will evaluate academic progress and eligibility for application to Nursing Upper Division. The position will simultaneously support pre-nursing student recruitment, admission, progression, retention, professional development, and other initiatives for the School of Nursing.

QUALIFICATIONS Education
  • Minimum: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Preferred: Master's degree from an accredited institution
Experience
  • Two or more years of undergraduate student advisement experience, preferably nursing or allied health students.
  • Strong organizational, planning, leadership, and interpersonal/customer service skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient in using variable electronic platforms and programs including those associated with student advisement and reporting systems.
  • Effective written, verbal, and electronic communications with suitable time management competencies.
  • Knowledge of HPUs advisement processes and systems is a plus.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Responsibilities
  • Guides pre-nursing students in the development of meaningful educational plans and appropriate academic choices in support of preparation for application to Nursing Upper Division.
  • Explains program requirements to enrolled and interested pre-nursing students while providing information about appropriate resources and opportunities.
  • Provides information about current and changing curricular requirements as well as career opportunities and resources.
  • Communicates and meets regularly with pre-nursing advisees.
  • Assists pre-nursing students with the registration process, including course planning, assessment of transfer credit, etc.
  • Provides support for pre-nursing students who are at risk and makes appropriate referrals to campus resources.
  • Participates in campus-wide events, including Open House, Student Preview Fairs, Presidential Scholar Weekend events, Guidance Counselor events, etc.
  • Monitors and manages the accuracy of the School of Nursing's website and printed materials regarding pre-nursing advisement.
  • Maintains record of correspondence and statistics on events associated with pre-nursing recruitment, advisement, progression, and retention.
  • Collects data, maintains records, and provides general reports regarding events and activities associated with recruitment, admission, advisement, progression, retention, etc., to the dean of the School of Nursing.
  • Contributes to advisement activities related to the School of Nursing's strategic plan, regulatory requirements, and accreditation specifics.
  • Collaborates with University Success Coaches and assumes advisement for pre-nursing students during their sophomore year.
  • Serves as the liaison for nursing facility tours in collaboration with Undergraduate Admissions and other campus partners.
  • Develops advisement strategies and academic mapping materials and activities for pre-nursing students.
  • Proactively tracks and monitors academic progress for pre-nursing students identified as 'at risk.'
  • Consults with nursing dean and other campus partners on issues pertaining to transfer course equivalencies for current and potential students.
  • Develops, updates, or revises students' academic plan(s) accordingly.
  • Communicates frequently with the nursing dean and advises faculty on general and specific student advisement issues.
  • Serves on school and university committees such as those devoted to enrollment management, recruitment, progression, retention, and academic advising, among others.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the nursing dean.
Essential Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of the University's general education requirements, academic policies and procedures, and Nursing Upper Division program eligibility requirements.
  • Knowledge of strategies that support student academic outcomes.
  • Knowledge of advisement management systems.
Essential Skills
  • Builds collaborative partnerships with School of Nursing faculty and staff to provide effective integrated advising and retention activities.
  • Collaborates with university officials outside of the School of Nursing including Student Services, Career and Professional Development, Undergraduate Admissions, Registrar's Office, Academic Affairs, among others to enhance student success.
  • Represents the School of Nursing at various events.
  • Follows best practices, policies, and procedures and adheres to university standards to build and support student academic success.
  • Assists with meeting School of Nursing strategic goals for continuation and timely student matriculation into Nursing Upper Division.
  • Proficient in software applications including but not limited to MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams as well as video communications (ie, Zoom) and other relevant Internet and database applications.
  • Uses a student-centered and customer-service approach when advising.
Ability To
  • Follow instructions as well as take initiatives.
  • Adapt to change in a progressive environment.
  • Work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and embrace working in an interdisciplinary atmosphere.
  • Work evening and weekend hours as needed. Some travel may be required.
  • Effectively communicate with students, parents, faculty/staff, and other university personnel orally, in writing, and through technology.
  • Work collaboratively and sometimes independently to achieve program outcomes.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Research, compile, analyze and interpret data, and develop meaningful reports and related recommendations.
